Living with honesty and integrity is also good for you personally. You attract similar people, build a trustworthy environment around you build self respect. In contrast, if you live like a shark — manipulating and playing zero-sum games — you'll end up surrounded by other sharks

Two hunters go into the forest. They can each hunt a rabbit alone — small, safe, guaranteed food. Or they can work together to hunt a stag — which gives far more food, but only if both cooperate. If one person abandons the plan to grab a rabbit instead, the other gets nothing.

Naval references the Stag Hunt to argue that a society where people trust each other, show up, and play fair creates win-win outcomes. But that society only exists if enough people behave with integrity. It's like a collective bet on the future.

Naval uses the Stag Hunt to illustrate that on your own, you can go out and "hunt rabbits" — survive, do okay. But if you have enough trust to cooperate with others, you can "hunt a stag" — and both of you end up better off.

The easiest AI agent use case to spot:
Find the repeated decision buried inside a manual workflow.
Read context → make a call → use a tool → hand it off → repeat tomorrow.
That loop is the job description for an agent.
