Ibrahim Ambwere was a self-made billionaire from Chavakali, Vihiga County, born in 1936 and orphaned at age 8 with no formal education.

He started at age 12 as a KSh 3-per-month sweeper for mason Karam Singh, learned masonry and carpentry on the job, and was gifted tools plus KSh 3,000 when Singh left Kenya at independence in 1961.

Using that capital, Ambwere started a carpentry shop with just KSh 38 and grew it into a vast real estate and business empire across Western Kenya, Kisumu, Nairobi, and beyond.
He became nationally known in the early 1980s when he offered KSh 48 million, over KSh 4 billion today, to pay striking teachers’ delayed salaries during Moi’s government, saying “teachers are special.” Though the government probed his wealth instead of accepting the help, Ambwere never declared his net worth but owned major properties like Ambwere Plaza and Towers, and remained a symbol of resilience and generosity until his later years.
