The Spanish Conquest of Mexico is probably the closest that real history gets to science fiction or fantasy.
For the Spaniards it was like landing on another planet.
Everything was different - the colours, the smells, the plants, the animals. The culture they encountered was so far away from Renaissance Europe it may as well have been aliens.
Read Bernal Diaz del Castillo's description of the Spanish first entering Tenochtitlan:
"We came to a broad causeway and continued our march towards Mexico, and when we saw all those cities and villages built in the water, and other great towns on dry land, and that straight causeway leading to Mexico, we were astounded. These great towns and shrines and buildings rising from the water, all made of stone, seemed like an enchanted vision from the tale of Amadis. Indeed, some of our soldiers asked whether the things we saw were not a dream? It is not to be wondered at, for their eyes had never beheld the like. Some of our soldiers even said that if we could only explain to the Emperor Charles V what we had seen, he would send many armies and be happy to die a thousand deaths to conquer such great riches. I say all this because I am not a courtier and do not know how to flatter, but only to tell the truth."
"He's a genius," Maya told me later, adjusting her blazer. "People will always try to dim a bright kid's light so they feel taller. Our job is just to buy them bigger lightbulbs."
🗣️ Carlos Tevez: “When I arrived in England, they took me to see the house the club was offering me. It had a garden, a garage, shiny floors... and silence.
A lot of silence. I came from Fuerte Apache, where five of us slept in one room and gunshots were part of the night. I didn’t know how to live in tranquility. It scared me.
After a while, I asked to move. I went to a poorer, noisier neighbourhood, where the neighbours shouted, cooked on the sidewalk, and kids played in the street.
That’s where I felt at home. Not all of us dream of the same things. Some of us dream of going back to what we are.”

Heidi and Ed Savitt first met as six-year-olds in 1997 while on separate family holidays at a resort in Gumbet, Bodrum, Turkey.
During the two-week vacation, they became inseparable childhood friends, played together on the beach, and held hands. After the holiday ended, they lost touch, and Heidi completely forgot about the boy she had met.
Fourteen years later, in 2011, they unknowingly crossed paths again as students at Newcastle University. They ended up living in the same student house, started dating, and eventually got engaged in 2015. The incredible truth only came to light during a subsequent family dinner when Heidi's mother remembered her daughter’s childhood "holiday romance" with a boy named Ed.
Her mother later found an old family photo album in the attic containing the picture of them together as children. The couple was so stunned by this twist of fate that they even recreated the childhood photo for their wedding invitations before getting married in 2016.
