New book projects are in the works over the next several years--a football book to round out The Pack Trilogy, and an updated Wax Pack for you baseball fans. Follow, retweet, spread the word please!
It was #OTD in 2005 that #Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg got the call to Cooperstown. For some reason Sandberg made it on his third year on the ballot. Should have been a first ballot Hall of Famer. When he retired he held the record for most Gold Glove Awards by a second baseman (nine), the most consecutive errorless games by a second baseman (123) and the most home runs by a second baseman (277 of his 282 home runs came as a second baseman).

This time I’m on a mission to find truth in the world of professional wrestling, trying to uncover the real identities of the 1980s WWF wrestlers of my youth. I wanted to know just how "real" wrestling is in terms of its effect on those who do it (I even got in the ring myself!).
What’s it about? It all starts with the Iron Sheik, my childhood hero, who I came to know personally at age 20 and who four years later I tagged with to write his biography. Except it all went sideways from there. “The Iron Sheik just threatened to kill me,” is the first line of the book, just to give you an idea.
How did I do it? In true Wax Pack fashion, I drove 12,525 miles last summer to reunite with the Sheik and to find six of the other wrestlers who wrestled on the night in 1983 when he became WWF champion: Tito Santana, The Masked Superstar (Demolition Ax), Sgt. Slaughter, Tony Atlas, Jose Luis Rivera, and Hulk Hogan (although technically Hogan wasn’t on that card, but beat the Sheik a month later to become the champion). Plus, the man behind the curtain of it all, Vince McMahon.
I think this book is better than The Wax Pack. It certainly is more ambitious, more sobering, but still fun. Just to give you a peek:
· I interview WWF front office people from the mid-80s who have never spoken on the record before to uncover just how Vince McMahon did it.
· I find Hulk Hogan’s childhood friends and band mates to tell the story of who Terry Bollea was before Hulk Hogan.
· I go full-circle with the Iron Sheik, returning to his home in Fayetteville, Georgia.
Here’s my ask: Unless you’re Michael Lewis (and I am not), it’s hard to make a living writing books, even when you get a good book deal. That’s why I still teach at Merritt College and why I still write freelance articles. And in full transparency, royalty rates are tough: I only get 10% of the price of my books (this maxes out at 15% if I sell enough copies).
If you like my work, please consider pre-ordering The Six Pack at this link; if my publisher sees enough pre-orders, they are more likely to put more resources behind promoting it.
Thank you for supporting the arts and for believing in my mission of singing the unsung. I don’t take any of my readers for granted, and take pride in the fact that I respond to every email or letter I receive. Please keep them coming.
