The culture of intellectual property theft is deeply embedded in Kenya, and young, impressionable creatives are always the primary victims.

I remember 2005 clearly. As a young coffee expert, I pitched a solid proposal to the then-owner of Thika Coffee Mills, Pius Ngugi, and his shitty son Mbugua, together with some foreign partners.

They stole the idea and implemented it.

You will notice that Kenya’s rich old-money scumbags carry an ingrained contempt for excellence that comes from ordinary Kenyans. Every meeting or pitch is carefully designed to drain your spirit so that you can never overtake them.

That is why I have zero respect for the so-called “billionaires” and boomers of this country. Their money does not impress me. And if enough people listen, we can bring this entire colonial oligarchy down. I have the blueprint.

Those early experiences taught me caution. From as early as 2009, I completely stopped pitching free proposals. I only work with clients who prepay.

I have warned people repeatedly: avoid meetings where someone wants to “pick your brain,” especially in coffee houses like Java. I stopped doing those a long time ago.

Before we dismantle this colonial infrastructure next year, you must find creative ways to survive in the interim. Stop sharing your brains for free. Kenyans are an entitled and often pathetic lot.

The same person who forces you through back-to-back unpaid proposals just to secure a 50k gig will casually send 20 million to a stranger in Japan for a new car. It is pure contempt. And the younger you are, the easier you are to prey on.

Protect your ideas. Charge for your time. Demand payment upfront. This British colonial system is designed to extract from you while protecting those who already have everything. Stop feeding it.

Edwin Gathigi, a man wrongfully sentenced to life in prison for defilement, was released just one week ago after new evidence emerged that proved his innocence. The 24-year-old had been convicted in 2025 based largely on the testimony of his grandmother, who claimed to have witnessed the crime.

In an emotional visit to Edwin in August 2025, his grandmother admitted to providing false testimony, alleging she had been influenced by her daughter to do so.

The case took a complicated turn when Edwin's mother revealed that her sister had falsely accused her son out of a long-standing feud. “This was never about Edwin; it was a personal vendetta,” she asserted.

After months of legal battles and an appeal process utilizing this testimony, Edwin was finally declared innocent and released from Nyeri Maximum Security Prison on January 21, 2026. His plight was brought to light by journalist Simon Kibe, who highlighted his story on YouTube, drawing significant public attention to the case.

In an interview with NTV shortly after his release, Gathigi recounted the fateful day of the accusations. “I was at my grandmother's place for the holidays when my cousin called me into the sitting room. My grandmother claimed that my younger cousin had accused me of rape. I was in shock,” he recalled, overwhelmed by disbelief. He even offered to undergo medical testing to clear his name.

In the days following the accusation, Edwin found himself isolated. Attempts to defend himself were met with silence, and he was ultimately ambushed by police, with his aunt and grandmother present but failing to intervene. “None of them tried to correct the false claims,” he lamented, reflecting on the betrayal of those he trusted most.
