At the United Nations General Assembly, I challenged a world that still decides whose lives deserve protection and whose suffering can be ignored.

No race is superior. No people are disposable. Until we honour that truth, "everywhere is war" remains a warning we have failed to heed.

While Israel continues its genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and persists with imposing its unlawful occupation and system of apartheid against Palestinians, PM Benjamin Netanyahu, wanted by the ICC for war crimes and crimes against humanity, is set to address the UN General Assembly in New York instead of standing trial at The Hague.

It is doubly shameful that the US government continues to ignore the arrest warrant against Netanyahu - while denying Palestinian representatives visas to attend the UNGA.

Nearly two years since the ICC issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu, impunity continues to reign - and Palestinians are paying the price. Continuing to undermine the ICC sends a cruel message to all victims of international crimes that prospects for justice remain elusive while the USA and other powerful states deliberately erode the universal value of international law.

All states, including the USA, should enforce the Court’s arrest warrants and hand over Netanyahu to the ICC. International law must be upheld and international justice mechanisms supported to end impunity for international crimes and ensure respect for human rights for all.

📝 Discurso do presidente Lula na Assembleia Geral da ONU

Esta é a décima ocasião em que abro o Debate Geral desta Assembleia.

Desde que ocupei pela primeira vez esta tribuna, em 2003, este é o momento mais crítico das Nações Unidas. O sentimento que me move hoje é o da indignação.

A ONU está falhando em uma das suas missões mais elevadas: a de livrar a humanidade do flagelo da guerra.

Sua credibilidade nunca esteve tão baixa.

Sua capacidade de proteger os mais vulneráveis – os que não têm exército, nem arsenais – nunca foi tão pequena.

Somos todos reféns do imobilismo de um Conselho de Segurança que não cumpre o seu papel.

Em 1946, já na primeira sessão desta Assembleia, o Brasil alertava para o alto preço que a comunidade internacional pagaria pelo direito de veto.

Esse vício de origem da Carta da ONU conferiu às grandes potências o privilégio da insensatez.

A esse pecado original soma-se agora uma profunda crise de liderança.

O ano de 2025 registrou o maior número de conflitos armados desde a Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Trilhões de dólares financiam uma nova corrida armamentista.

Tensões geopolíticas ameaçam transformar confrontos regionais em uma conflagração de proporções globais.

Os que detêm as rédeas das decisões cruciais devem atuar com responsabilidade e sentido de urgência.

Os líderes dos países que integram o Conselho de Segurança precisam se reunir.

Não desconheço as realidades do poder.

Mas as concessões à lei do mais forte já passaram dos limites.

Isso não é idealismo. É o mais puro realismo.

A guerra não é a continuação da política por outros meios. É a falência total da política.

Num mundo interdependente, liderar é conciliar os interesses da pátria com os da humanidade.

Essa é a constatação de alguém que representa uma nação amante da paz e da liberdade.

Alguém que lutou contra uma ditadura militar e defendeu seu país contra um golpe de estado.

É a convicção de um operário eleito três vezes presidente e que retirou o Brasil do Mapa da Fome.

Esta Assembleia corrigiu recentemente distorções históricas.

Reconheceu o tráfico de africanos escravizados como o mais grave crime contra a humanidade.

Aprovou a representação mais precisa do mapa-múndi.

Agora deve se debruçar sobre temas determinantes para o futuro da humanidade.

Somos chamados a optar entre o multilateralismo ou unilateralismo. A democracia ou extremismo. Soberania ou subordinação.

Essas escolhas demandam coragem, vontade política e clareza de objetivos.

Isso é o que se espera de um Estadista.

لقد تطلب الأمر ما يقرب من نصف قرن وسلسلة من الحروب الكارثية في الشرق الأوسط حتى تدرك دول الخليج أن أمنها يجب أن يرتكز في المقام الأول على منظومة أمنية مشتركة مع دول المنطقة - قائمة على الحوار وبناء الثقة والتعاون - وليس على الاعتماد على قوى أجنبية تسعى دائماً لتحقيق مصالحها الذاتية...
والأهم من ذلك، إدراكها أن إيران هي - وستظل - جارتها وجزءاً لا غنى عنه في أي ترتيبات أمنية إقليمية مستدامة.

وإنني آمل - كما دأبتُ على الدعوة منذ عقود - أن تدرك بقية الدول العربية أيضاً، وإن كان ذلك للأسف عبر تجارب مريرة، أن إرساء نظام أمني إقليمي موثوق يضم جميع دول المنطقة - بما فيها تركيا - هو السبيل الأمثل لتحقيق السلام والاستقرار في الشرق الأوسط (شريطة، بطبيعة الحال، إنهاء الاحتلال الإسرائيلي للأراضي الفلسطينية وإقامة منطقة خالية من الأسلحة النووية في الشرق الأوسط).

It took almost half a century and a series of catastrophic wars in the Middle East for the Gulf states to realize that their security should primarily be based on a security architecture together with countries in the region - through dialogue, trust building and cooperation- and not to rely on foreign powers which invariably work in their own self interest…
and more importantly that Iran is -and will remain- their neighbor and a necessary component of any sustainable regional security arrangement.

I Hope - as I have been calling for decades- that the rest of the Arab countries also recognize - unfortunately through bitter experience- that a credible regional security regime among all countries of the region, including Turkey, is the best way for peace and stability in the Middle East (subject of course to the end of Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories and the establishment of a Middle East nuclear weapons free zone.

Sublime texte "Le train de ma vie" de Jean d'Ormesson

"A la naissance, on monte dans le train et on rencontre nos parents.
Et on croit qu’ils voyageront toujours avec nous.
Pourtant, à une station, nos parents descendront du train, nous laissant seuls continuer le voyage…
Au fur et à mesure que le temps passe,
d’autres personnes montent dans le train.
Et ils seront importants : notre fratrie, amis, enfants, même l’amour de notre vie.
Beaucoup démissionneront (même l’amour de notre vie) et laisseront un vide plus ou moins grand.
D’autres seront si discrets qu’on ne réalisera pas qu’ils ont quitté leurs sièges.
Ce voyage en train sera plein de joies, de peines, d’attentes, de bonjours, d’au-revoir et d’adieux.
Le succès est d’avoir de bonnes relations avec tous les passagers pourvu qu’on donne le meilleur de nous-mêmes.
On ne sait pas à quelle station nous descendrons.
Donc vivons heureux, aimons et pardonnons !
Il est important de le faire, car lorsque nous descendrons du train, nous devrions ne laisser que des beaux souvenirs a ceux qui continuent leur voyage…

La dignidad y coherencia con que la Presidenta Bachelet encaró la candidatura a SG de Naciones Unidas será un ejemplo que permanecerá en la historia. Son tiempos en que el multilateralismo, el cumplimiento del derecho internacional y el respeto irrestricto de los derechos humanos están cuestionados y literalmente bajo fuego. Son tiempos en donde algunos poderosos imponen su ley mediante la fuerza y la humillación. Y lo que representa Michelle Bachelet es incómodo para quienes quieren que esto siga así.

Algunos se preguntan si es que en este contexto, donde por sus características, sus principios y trayectoria de vida, esta era desde el comienzo una candidatura improbable, valía la pena intentarlo. Habiendo conversado mucho con la Presidenta me atrevo a responder con profunda convicción que si, si valía la pena. Porque es justamente en los momentos adversos donde hay que defender con más fuerza lo que creemos, y aunque haya una derrota temporal, esa derrota se convertirá en semilla para el futuro.

Gracias a la Presidenta de México Claudia Sheinbaum y al Presidente de Brasil Lula da Silva por haber apoyado desde un comienzo, y haber seguido haciéndolo cuando la pista se puso más pesada.

Gracias Presidenta Bachelet por tu valentía y dignidad. Mi eterna admiración y respeto.

Ahead of the UN General Assembly in New York next week, I joined more than 1,500 academics and economists from 100+ countries in calling on global leaders to create an International Panel on Inequality (IPI), modelled on the IPCC, as recommended last year by the G20 Committee on Inequality led by @JosephEStiglitz.

On September 23, South Africa, Brazil, Norway, and Spain will convene, together with the UN Secretary-General and heads of state and government, to discuss the creation of the IPI.

The World Inequality Lab is actively supporting this initiative, which aligns with and can build on the work we have been doing for more than a decade.

Inequality is a political choice. It is shaped by the policies, institutions, and governance systems we build. In an increasingly chaotic world, establishing the facts and cooperating across borders remain our best tools for tackling it.

🚨 OBAMA ON AI: "If we are thinking about AI just in terms of how do we cure cancer or get better energy, you can do that without having agentic AI and having it just roaming free in the internet. The reason you are doing that is because you have to market a product that people will pay money for.

That’s a misalignment between what our society needs and the commercial imperatives that these companies are facing, not because necessarily they’re trying to do bad things, but because they’ve got to justify these valuations.

So, that’s one more reason why it is really important for us to have a competent government and a serious bipartisan conversation around this issue, and we have to do it fast. And I would encourage voters to pay attention to this. If somebody does not have a serious plan for how to deal with this, then they’re not meeting the moment, and you should probably look for somebody else."
