Exactly 35 years ago, in the night of February 23-24, 1987, a bright new star located in the Large Magellanic Could appears in the night sky.

This source is actually the core-collapse supernova of a ~20 solar mass blue supergiant, SN 1987A, which is the most recent supernova detected in the Milky Way vicinity. The remnant is still visible through an amateur telescope.
