POPE LEO XIV ASSESSMENT

It's still early in his pontificate, but I promised I would wait at least a year before making any serious assessment of Pope Leo XIV. Here it is below. Keep in mind, this pontificate is still young, and so is Robert Prevost. He can change, and he still has a lot of room to do just that. But so far, this is what I see. I've tried to remain as objective and dispassionate as possible, while still maintaining my standards and principles. Just so there is no ambiguity or misinterpretation...

I, Shane Schaetzel, fully affirm that Robert Francis Prevost is the duly elected and inaugurated Pope Leo XIV, Vicar of Christ and Bishop of Rome, bearing all the authority and responsibilities to that position, and as of this date, there is no other.

The scale is NOT a Left versus Right scale in American politics. It is not “mean traditionalist” versus “nice Catholic.” It is a map of how a man treats two things: defined dogma, and the Faith as it was handed down before 1965.

Left is modernism. Right is tradition. The numbers are not insults. They are tests.

1 — Modernist heretic.
This is Pascendi. Dogma is treated as a historically conditioned expression of religious feeling. Defined teaching can “develop” into its opposite. If Leo were here, he would deny a defined dogma and persist. He has not done that.

2 — Progressive conciliar.
Holy Orders, marriage, and blessings are handled as reversible pastoral experiments. Women priests become a timeline. Same-sex “marriage” becomes a conversation. Leo has said women priests are impossible. He has said the teaching on marriage and so-called transgender rights is unchanged. He is not a 2.

3 — Francis-type.
The governing frame is Amoris Laetitia, Fiducia Supplicans, and Traditionis Custodes. Climate and migration sermons do the work that doctrine used to do. Leo was Francis’s man at the Dicastery for Bishops. He talks synodality. He will not rip up Fiducia. He will not repeal Traditionis Custodes. He visits mosques and talks ceasefire. That is the Francis inheritance, but he is not "Francis 2.0."

4 — Institutional conciliar. This is where he sits.
Vatican II is the “guiding star.” Synodality is a principle, not a slogan he can drop. Traditionis Custodes stands. The first encyclical is social and anthropological — Magnifica Humanitas, timed to Rerum Novarum — not a correction of the last twelve years. A lay woman can run a curial dicastery. When the SSPX consecrated bishops again in 2026, he treated it as a break and renewed the excommunications. That is the post-conciliar institution talking. The pope is the pope. The Council is the Council. The old Mass is tolerated when useful and fenced when it is not.

5 — Reform of the reform.
This is Ratzinger. Summorum Pontificum logic. The 1962 Missal is an enrichment, not a problem to be managed. Leo wears the vestments correctly. He restored the pallium custom. He allowed the old Mass in St. Peter’s again. That is a half-step toward 5. It is not 5. He will not restore Summorum. His own liturgy chief has already said so.

6 — Conservative diocesan.
The old Mass is generous. No new doctrinal experiments. Leo is more careful than Francis. He is not this.

7 — Recognize and Resist.
The pope is the pope. Specific acts that contradict Scripture and Tradition are refused. The man is prayed for. The office is not denied. The Church is not left. That is the lay duty in a crisis. It is not Leo’s program. He is the crisis’s administrator, not its resistor. I am Recognize and Resist. This is where I stand, not Leo.

8 — SSPX.
The 1988 line. Bishops without a Roman mandate. Leo answered that with excommunication. Do not pretend otherwise.

9 — Sedevacantist.
The See is judged vacant. That is not Catholic. A future pope can judge a dead pope. You cannot. Leo occupies the Chair. Number nine is a refusal to live in the Church that actually exists.

So I put the pin where Leo's acts put it. Leo XIV is an Augustinian missionary who became Francis’s bishop-maker and then the pope. He believes Vatican II. He believes in synodality. He will not make the 1962 Missal the Roman Rite again. He will not bless the Écône solution. He also will not define women priests or rewrite marriage.

That is not heresy in the Pascendi sense. It is not tradition in the 1954 sense. It is the conciliar institution, tidier in choir dress than the last pontificate, unchanged in its governing assumptions.

I say: Recognize him. Pray for him. Do not confuse vestments with restoration. Keep the old Faith. Stay in the Church. Refuse the compromises. Leo does not have an enemy in me. He has an ally who is not afraid to stand up to him and tell him the truth publicly. He is not Francis 2.0, nor is he worse than Francis. He is slightly better. If you think he's the same as Francis or worse, you've not been following Leo. You've been following the wrong news media. He is slightly better than Francis, with lots of room for improvement, and he's young enough to make it happen.

That is my most sober, objective and dispassionate assessment of him. Take it for whatever it's worth to you.

E finita la Cena pasquale prese il pane e benedettolo lo porge ai suoi: “Prendete e mangiate: questo è il mio corpo!”. E la sostanza del pane si cangiò nel suo adorabile corpo. Poi prese il calice, e reso le grazie, disse: “Prendete e bevete: questo è il mio sangue, il sangue della nuova alleanza, che deve essere sparso per voi in remissione dei peccati”. E la sostanza del vino si mutò nel suo sangue preziosissimo.

Ma la carità di questo divino Amante, figliuola mia, non è ancora al colmo. Egli volle che non solo i presenti fossero partecipi d’un dono così grande, ma ancora tutti i suoi seguaci nei secoli avvenire. Memore della dolcissima promessa fatta poco innanzi con quelle tenerissime parole: “Non si turbi il cuor vostro e non tema, perché non vi lascerò orfani, ma sarò con voi fino alla consumazione dei secoli”. Memore ancora di quelle altre memorabili parole: “Venite a me voi tutti che siete affaticati ed aggravati, ed io vi solleverò”. Memore, dico, quest’oggi delle sue promesse di amore ai suoi inviati conferisce, innanzi di uscire dal Cenacolo per recarsi nell’orto degli olivi, agli Apostoli la pienezza d’un sacerdozio che doveva, per mezzo della sacra ordinazione, conferirsi e trasmettersi ad altri sino alla consumazione dei secoli.

La sua parola: “Fate questo in memoria di me” assicurava l’universalità del dono attraverso tutti i luoghi e tutti i tempi. Egli ha dato compimento alle brame amorose del suo Cuore santissimo, che pure aveva detto di trovare le sue delizie nello stare coi figli degli uomini.

Figliuola mia, non consentiremo noi con l’Apostolo prediletto che, nel rapimento dell’ammirazione, proclama l’eccesso della carità di questo divin Redentore per gli uomini: “In finem dilexit eos”? Non è infatti la Santissima Eucaristia un compendio che in sé racchiude ogni sorte di grazia? Ma che dico? La Santissima Eucaristia non è solamente un compendio degli altri suoi doni, ma è un dono nuovo singolarissimo della sua immensa carità per noi perché Gesù, dandosi in cibo e bevanda all’uomo, con lui s’immedesima mediante l’unione la più perfetta che possa avverarsi fra la creatura ed il Creatore; insieme con la santissima umanità gli dà i meriti infiniti acquistati su questa terra; gli dà la sua divinità con i tesori immensi della sua Sapienza, della sua Onnipotenza, della sua Bontà.

E qui mi duole dover far punto perché le forze mi vengono meno e la mano mi trema, ma innanzi di finire non posso trattenermi dall’esclamare qui con Giovanni Crisostomo: “O uomo, considera attentamente l’amore che ricevi, la mensa a cui ti assidi. Noi facciamo cibo Colui nel vedere il quale tremano gli Angioli né ardiscono guardarlo per lo splendore onde brilla; noi diventiamo con Gesù una carne sola ed un solo corpo. Chi racconterà le meraviglie del Signore? Chi farà risuonare le sue lodi? Alcune madri affidano i loro figli alle nutrici, ma non fa così Gesù: Egli ci nutre del suo proprio sangue, ed in tutte le guise a noi si unisce”.

Giuseppina! La Santissima Eucaristia è il massimo dei miracoli; è il segno ultimo e più grande dell’amore di Gesù per noi ed Egli tutto questo l’ha operato per darci una vita piena, abbondante, perfetta: “Io venni – Egli dice – perché gli uomini abbiano la vita” – e questa infatti Egli ci diede mediante la sua Incarnazione –, “e l’abbiano in abbondanza”, e questo pure è ciò che ci va dando ogni giorno più ancora nella Santissima Comunione.

Finisco con l’animarci a vicenda di conservare in noi con maggior gelosia il prezioso deposito della vera fede in questo sacramento, di riconoscerne con sensi di gratitudine sempre maggiore della bontà di Dio l’immenso beneficio, di amare con maggior trasporto questo Dio di amore, di compierne con maggiore diligenza tutte le opere sante per piacere a questo Dio umanato per un dì goderne più copioso il frutto qui in terra ed ottenerne più ricco il guiderdone nei cieli».
