Zawia3: Blocked Twice Amid International Condemnation from 33 Organizations and McGill University

🛑 Blocked Again in Less Than a Month
The Zawia3 website has been blocked in Egypt once again, sparking widespread condemnation from 33 international and regional human rights and press organizations, including HuMENA, McGill University and major media platforms like Daraj and Raseef22. This move is seen as a serious violation of press freedom and a further escalation of censorship targeting independent media in Egypt.

📢 Official Statement on the Block and Attempts to Bypass It
On February 20, Zawia3 confirmed in a statement that it had been officially blocked, pointing out that this was not an isolated case. More than 500 news and human rights websites have been blocked in Egypt in recent years.

Despite launching an alternative domain, Zawia3 was blocked again on February 27, just days later. The swift action suggested a deliberate effort to silence the platform and cut off its audience.

⚖️ Crackdown on Independent Media and Press Freedom
In a joint statement, the signatory human rights and press organizations expressed deep concern over the increasing crackdown on press freedom in Egypt. They stressed that the blocking of Zawia3 is not just about one platform—it’s part of a broader strategy to suppress independent journalism and restrict access to diverse sources of news.

📜 A Violation of Egypt’s Constitution and International Commitments
The statement emphasized that press freedom is not just a fundamental right but a cornerstone of any democratic society. It pointed out that Egypt’s actions contradict its own constitution and violate Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which guarantees the right to freedom of expression and access to information without unlawful restrictions.

💻 Digital Censorship Tactics
The statement also highlighted the growing use of advanced censorship techniques, such as reset attacks, which don’t completely block a website but make it unstable and difficult to access. This tactic forces users to give up trying, often without realizing they are being deliberately denied access.

🚨 The Impact on Journalism and Public Debate
The signatories warned that these digital censorship tactics are designed to silence independent voices and create a climate of fear and self-censorship among journalists and activists. This leads to a shrinking space for public discourse and weakens freedom of expression in Egypt.

📢 Calls to Lift the Block and End Censorship
The statement urged Egyptian authorities to:
✅ Immediately lift the block on Zawia3 and all other independent news websites.
✅ End digital censorship and stop suppressing press freedom.
✅ Ensure a safe environment for journalists, protecting them from legal and security threats.

📣 Zawia3: Journalism Is Not a Privilege Granted by the Authorities
In its response to the block, Zawia3 posed a critical question: “Who gets to decide that a news platform should no longer exist? Why is offering people multiple perspectives seen as a threat?” The platform stressed that this isn’t just about one website—it’s part of a larger effort to control the flow of information and dictate what is allowed in the public sphere.

🔎 A Pattern of Systematic Censorship in Egypt
Zawia3 is not the first independent news platform to face government-imposed restrictions. Other blocked outlets include Mada Masr, Masr 360, Zat Masr, Cairo 24, and Al-Sulta Al-Rabe’a, among many others that have been cut off from public access.

🗞️ Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Condemns the Block
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) strongly condemned the blocking of Zawia3, stating that Egyptian authorities are increasingly using technology to clamp down on independent media. The CPJ called for an end to press censorship in Egypt and revealed that it had reached out to the Supreme Council for Media Regulation for an explanation, but received no response.

⚖️ Egyptian Journalists' Syndicate: Crackdown Goes Beyond Blocking
Mahmoud Kamel, head of the Freedoms Committee at the Egyptian Journalists' Syndicate, described the blocking of Zawia3 as part of a systematic campaign to stifle independent media, either through direct censorship or bureaucratic obstacles preventing media organizations from obtaining licenses. He emphasized that the Syndicate has repeatedly condemned these policies and called for their immediate reversal.

🔎 Press Freedom in Egypt: A Deepening Crisis
As censorship in Egypt intensifies, one fact remains clear: independent journalism is under attack, restrictions are tightening, and journalists are facing growing obstacles in their pursuit of truth.
