We are extremely alarmed by the latest information we have received regarding the whereabouts of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyyah, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital. He should now be considered as victim of enforced disappeared, and as such at great risk of torture and ill-treatment. Israel authorities must urgently disclose the location of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyyah.
Dr. Abu Safiyyah was reportedly arrested on December 27, 2024, when IDF forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital. Video footage from that day shows the senior doctor walking toward an IDF armored vehicle before being taken for questioning. Following the incident, an IDF spokesperson confirmed his arrest and stated that he had been transferred for interrogation. However, since then, no further information has been provided about his whereabouts.
But on Thursday January 1st, the Israeli military informed Physicians for Human Rights that they have no record of Dr. Abu Safiyyah’s detention. This response came after PHRI, acting on behalf of Dr. Abu Safiyyah’s family requested information to facilitate a lawyer’s visit on January 2.
In its response to PHRI’s inquiry, the military stated:
"Following your inquiry, we would like to inform you that a review has found no indication of the arrest or detention of the individual in question."
In light of this denial, PHRI has now filed a petition with the Israeli High Court of Justice (HCJ) on Thursday, demanding immediate disclosure of Dr. Abu Safiyyah’s location.
Since October 2023, Israel has detained hundreds of Palestinian healthcare workers from Gaza without charge or trial. Health workers have been subjected to torture and other ill-treatment and been held in incommunicado detention.
@EleanorChilds94 presents on the need for reform in intl’/UN protection regimes for heritage & safeguarding heritage sites from violence, positioning Israel’s impunity as a litmus test for mechanisms in place at UNESCO,UNSC,&UNHRC.

Repairing 'Colonial Amnesia'
History shows settler-colonialism is inherently at war with indigenous peoples. The indigenous people's existence and land connection threaten the colonial power, sparking cycles of repression and resistance.
Since violence is intrinsic to settler-colonialism, ending it requires ending settler-colonial practices.
It is so simple, yes.
On Senator Fatima Payman quitting the Labor party. A short 🧵
1. The Labor government has invoked “social cohesion”, “social harmony”, “avoiding division”, “respect”, “diversity”, being part of a “team” to discipline, punish and silence @SenatorPayman. It’s the same language that has been weaponized against students protesting at universities, vast cross-sections of the community joining weekly mass rallies around the country, public servants, artists, teachers, doctors & health care workers, lawyers, journalists, food & hospitality workers who have been vocal against Israel’s genocide on Palestinians.
This is huge. The students managed to achieve what faculty organising failed to do for years. They are giving us a solid win to build on & have built a powerful movement to continue the struggle for full divestment and boycott. Gratitude to these amazing students. An inspiration.
Students at @unimelb have renamed the Arts West building to 'Mahmoud’s Hall.'
It's in honour of Palestinian student @MahmoudAlnaouq1 who won a scholarship to study at the uni, but was killed with his family in an Israeli airstrike in #Gaza last October @Umelb4Palestine@AlnaouqA
They say that tomorrow is Eid, summer is gone, winter has arrived, then New Year, then summer again, Ramadan and Eid, and I stumble every day in a whole world designed from my nightmares.
There are a thousand soldiers and a thousand shells between me and my home.
The scenes out of Al Shifa, after Israeli withdrawal, are beyond horrifying & gruesome. Bodies - parts of bodies - scattered under the dirt & rubble. Buildings burnt to a crisp. Nothing left. Our world allowed hospitals to become slaughterhouses in Gaza for crazed butchers.
"For a colonized people the most essential value, because the most concrete, is first and foremost the land: the land which will bring them bread and, above all, dignity."

Virtual IWD Lecture - @gazaheart : Palestine is a Feminist Issue
Tomorrow at 3-4pm (Canberra, AEDT)
Palestine, and Palestinian women, remain mostly excluded from mainstream feminism. As the world watches the massacres in Gaza, it bears impacts on this.

We have seen it in Yarmouk. It was 2014.
Depriving the civilian population of objects indispensable to their survival is a war crime, & so is starvation as a method of warfare (also a crime agst humanity when part of widespread/systematic attack agst civilians).
