Draupadi Maurya, from a remote village in Bahraich, read that apple farming is emerging as a successful unconventional practice in UP. She had the idea but no money. So she took a ₹2–3 lakh loan through Samuh Sakhi and the Community Investment Fund, self-help group schemes supported by the govt, and went ahead with her vision. Today, she earns around ₹60–70k a month from her apple and vegetable farm.

Cash handouts may win votes but rarely change a household’s economic trajectory. Programs like Samuh Sakhi and CIF under NRLM build capability, organizing women into self-help groups, providing small but timely credit, and enabling sustainable incomes. UP is showing what effective policy on the ground looks like.

Asawari Jagdale, daughter of Santosh Jagdale who was killed in the Pahalgam terror attack told this to @IndianExpress 👇🏾

"We are going through financial hardship since the main bread earner of the family was killed by terrorists on April 22 last year. I had to give up my job in the private sector to be with my mother, who has been going through a tough time.

To add insult to injury, we are now being made to run from pillar to post for the government job assured by the state government.

We are shocked by the treatment from the administration, which is asking us to make rounds of Mantralaya to get our work done. The politicians just buy time by giving us false assurances that the process is on, but till date there is no communication from anyone on any progress.

It was the Chief Minister who made the announcement of a government job to me, while the two Deputy Chief Ministers had also assured us of support to this end. As the focus from the incident shifted, there has been no one who has communicated anything in writing about the job. In fact, no one has even enquired about me and my mother since then.

I cannot take up a job in the private sector to avoid the technicalities of leaving it in between, but I don’t have a government job in hand either. We are managing our finances only through our savings - no one can understand our sufferings.

It is the responsibility of the government to take care of us till we die, as our main bread earner has died because of them. I cannot forget what the terrorists said during the attack as they took the name of Narendra Modi and killed people on religious grounds.

I also wrote to the Prime Minister’s Office, but there was no reply from there too. Our efforts to meet the chief minister during his Pune visit went in vain as the authorities turned us away citing his busy schedule."

The family met the Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni recently and urged her to take up their matter.

What she sacrificed sometimes so I could have my can of Coke, I don’t even know. I’m not sure I want to. As a kid, you’re naive. You see your mom not eating a meal, and you think, “Oh, she’s not hungry? That’s weird. I’m starving.”

Looking back, you understand what she was doing.

As long as we were together at the dinner table at the end of the day, that was her happiness."

In June 2017, a minor girl accused Unnao BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of rape, but the police refused to register an FIR. After months of inaction, in April 2018, the girl attempted suicide by self-immolation outside the CM’s residence, which finally forced the authorities to file the FIR.

Meanwhile, her father was arrested on false charges and reportedly assaulted in police custody; he later died in hospital due to his injuries. Public outrage followed. Even before any proper investigation had begun, a key witness in this mysterious custodial death was also found dead.

The case was eventually transferred to the CBI. The CBI concluded that the girl’s father died due to injuries inflicted in custody and that the assault was connected to an attempt to pressure and intimidate the victim’s family.

In July 2019, while the victim was travelling to court with her two aunts and lawyer, their car was hit by a truck, killing both her aunts and leaving the victim and the lawyer critically injured, an incident later treated as a deliberate attempt to silence witnesses.

In December 2019, Sengar was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, but by then the victim’s family had already paid an irreparable price. The Unnao rape case had all the elements of an 80s–90s Bollywood villain plot: systemic intimidation, blatant abuse of power, and a trail of destruction that went far beyond the crime itself. But worse was still to come.

Yesterday, the Delhi High Court suspended the jail term and granted bail to Sengar. This is nothing but salt rubbed into the wounds of whatever little the victim’s family has left. An absolute disgrace. After everything they endured, this feels like the system mocking them. Shameful beyond words, and everyone should raise their voice against this.

VIDEO | Delhi: After 16 years, a Rohini court acquitted all the accused in the 2009 acid attack case of Panipat MBA student Shaheen Malik. The trial, transferred to Delhi in 2013, involved allegations of harassment and conspiracy behind the attack.

Victim’s advocate Madiah Shahjar says, “In the Shaheen Malik case, the court acquitted all the accused, citing insufficient evidence, a faulty and incomplete investigation, and the absence of the victim’s evidence on record, though an inquiry has been ordered against the investigating officer. While the court expressed sympathy, it stated that justice, not sympathy, was sought after a 16-year legal battle. The decision will be challenged in the High Court and, if required, in the Supreme Court.”
