We met once more with some of the survivors of the Andes tragedy and the family members of the deceased in the mountain right after they saw Society of the Snow.
I’d dare to say the meeting took place thanks to the movie.
This moving video —what transpires from this encounter— has an immeasurable value for us.
To be a firsthand witness to how they hugged and to feel —almost touch— the love they shared among them was the best possible reward I got from shooting this story.
In some cases, this was a reconciliation 51 years in the making.
The fact that a movie has been able to bring a tiny bit of peace, maybe even has helped to bring down a wall of silence or even has been of assistance in mitigating some of the enduring pain from all these years, made it quite clear how necessary and important was to make it and how relevant it is the task we are dedicated to.
Stories are important.
Using fiction to be able to get into other people’s skin is such a powerful tool to feel empathy, to understand we are all in this together.
We are all one.
I would like to thank all the survivors for telling the stories of those who lived.
And I would also like to thank those who didn’t come back for allowing them to do so.
