We once had a president who understood the horrid business of war and had won the greatest military battle in history on D-Day. Thereafter he never hesitated about the need to avoid new wars at all hazards. Here is what he said in a memorable oration that the bone-spur man now in the Oval Office could never fathom, even after he has lost the stupidest elective war in American history.

In his “Cross of Iron” address to the American Society of Newspaper Editors in 1953 President Eisenhower pulled no punches, delivering in lofty prose sentiments that today's War Party on the Potomac has never heard so much of a peep of from any recent president:

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement.

We pay for a single fighter with a half-million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people... This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron".

An American farmer from Iowa says fertilizer prices have surged 77% in just 12 days since the start of the U.S.–Iran conflict.

Why does this matter?

Because fertilizer is the backbone of modern agriculture.

Nearly 30% of global fertilizer supply moves through the Strait of Hormuz — the same choke point now at the center of escalating tensions.

If shipping is disrupted, the chain reaction is simple:

Higher fertilizer → lower crop yields → higher food prices.

And the warning sign is already there.

Corn prices have only risen 5%, meaning farmers’ costs are exploding while their income barely moves.

If this continues into the planting season, the real impact will appear months later at harvest.
