A separate population estimate, conducted independently of the above study, placed the combined total of Africa's two elephant species at between 415,000 and 540,000 as of 2016. This remains the most recent comprehensive, continent-wide estimate of African elephant populations.

Between 1964 and 2016, Africa’s elephant populations declined by 77%, primarily due to poaching and habitat loss. While elephants disappeared from some areas, their numbers rebounded in others, thanks to successful conservation efforts.

More than 30 zoo across the United States have closed their elephant exhibits in the past three decades. We are happy that the @OaklandZoo has recently sent their beloved last elephant, Osh, to sanctuary. (1/3)

Osh has been spending time knocking down large trees in the habitat to snack on the abundance of browse! We are thrilled to see this natural elephant behavior as it is a sign that he is acclimating well.

#TheElephantEthogram - A juvenile female approaches us Head-Waggling and gives a Nasal-Trumpet. She stops to consider us. Then she Head-Waggles away to join other young elephants and gives two Pulsated-Trumpet followed by another Nasal-Trumpet.

During the years we studied the @GorongosaPark elephant population we identified 24 families living in two clans that we named the Urema & Pungue Clans. In addition, there were some 160 independent adult males.
