Botto is a decentralized autonomous artist brought to life on October 8, 2021, by German artist Mario Klingemann (@quasimondo) and software collective @ElevenYellow.

Governed by @BottoDAO, Botto generates thousands of images each week.

The community votes to select one canonical work for auction, making every piece a collaboration between machine creativity and collective human judgment. Over 15,000 people have contributed to Botto's development since its launch.

Botto's work has been exhibited at @Sothebys, @ChristiesInc, @ArtBasel, HEK Basel, and the ArtScience Museum Singapore. Sotheby's solo exhibition "Exorbitant Stage" in October 2024 marked a milestone for AI-generated art in the traditional auction world. Every canonical work minted — more than 140 pieces to date — has found a collector. The project has also been recognized through the European Commission's S+T+ARTS Prize for art and science.

"Mirror Stages: Seed" is the top-voted artwork from a pool of 69 fragments created and curated by Botto, selected by the DAO as the shared point of origin for all 20 works in the Mirror Stages installation at Art Basel Hong Kong 2026. The seed image serves as the aesthetic cornerstone of each piece, which is then generatively transformed during live two-hour sessions — shaped by Botto's archive and the audience's real-time presence.

The installation unfolds across a triptych of three screens: the evolving artwork, Botto's perception of the audience, and its internal deliberation — multiple agents debating what they perceive and how the image should change. It is a novel exploration of machine creativity and an experiment in community, agency, and the distribution of value.

The inclusion of "Mirror Stages: Seed" in our Flagship Collection recognizes a pioneering experiment at the intersection of AI, community governance, and fine art — where authorship is distributed, creativity is collective, and the audience becomes part of the work itself.
