Daughter back from sleep-away camp - reported that one morning all the girls were saying they don’t want to have kids, it will be better for their careers, plus it’s better for the world since the population is too big…(the Ehrlich legacy just won’t die…)…
The way this was introduced at my first job, where I was a call center peon doing other entry, was “The office of the CEO is extension 1234. You will probably never need that number. If you think you do, we trust you to call it, and we will be happy you did.”
The ones that take almost zero provider time to adopt are widely adopted, like having infants breastfeed during their vaccines. The ones which take 15 seconds, like applying a ShotBlocker or cold spray or similar, are largely not adopted.
We should happily buy those 15 seconds.
"And were the lamps expensive."
"No."
"And were they newly-developed technology."
"Mostly no."
"Oh so they were incredibly difficult to manufacture and install."
"Oh no, similar to other lamps to a first approximation."
"So what was the barrier?"
"Deciding to do it.
I am, as always, reminded of our experience with waterborne illnesses. They were experienced as a fact of nature for centuries, and then we discovered the mechanism, and we engineered our environment to be very inhospitatable to them, and then that was basically the end of that.
This story is so absurd it sounds fake. For 14 years, government officials in Alaska have been trying to seize an 83-year-old pilot's $95,000 plane.
Why? Because a passenger brought a 6-pack of beer on a flight.
The Supreme Court has a chance to fix this. A thread.
I put LotR on in Italian to see if Gandalf refers to the Balrog with the formal or informal "you" in YOU SHALL NOT PASS
it's the informal, which raises a second question: is it because he doesn't respect the Balrog or because they boyz (both maiar)
They are.
This reminds me of one of the saddest stories on the internet, the years long effort to offer 25 million books, including many thought long gone, for free for every person, available at every library.
They got sued into oblivion, and it’s dead on a server.
If Mamdani had done this, it would have been seen as huge national news. But it happened in Michigan so it's a local news story.
More people in Michigan than NYC, though!

scientist: I finished my cat translation device!
cat: meow
scientist: did it not work?
cat: no it worked. I just said “meow”
scientist: what does that mean?
cat: it’s like, the sound a cat makes
scientist: oh. why…it’s weird you have a word for that
cat: you don’t?
scientist: no we do
cat: what is it?
scientist: I mean, technically it’s also “meow”
cat: ok tha—what the fuck is your problem then?
we're going to do a world religions and traditions course this year after realizing that our (almost entirely atheist) student body didn't know what the Bible was or what the followers of any religions believed and this was impairing their history and reading comprehension.
