Author of mysteries and westerns, enjoyer of history and literature. Autodidact. Usually to be found in another century. Occasional bewildering ⚽ tweets.
Picking nine books of any kind is hard. Without some kind of parameters, it’s nigh on impossible. So these are all fiction, very personal choices, and don’t even include my favorite classics.
The Montana Historical society has a playlist on YouTube featuring almost an hour of home movie footage taken on and around a Montana ranch *in the 1920s.* Absolutely amazing. https://t.co/C8kq9Xp9Mj #westernwednesday#americanwest#montana
@LydiaCarns I didn't discover Enright till I was an adult, but I know I'd have loved her as a kid too. GONE-AWAY LAKE and this one are especially delightful.
I fell down a huge rabbit hole watching 1920-1940s farm and ranch home movies on YouTube last night. I added a ton of them to the bottom of this playlist: https://t.co/cRIXy75BQK
One of my favorites: these ingenious New Hampshire farmers doing absolutely everything with an old car repurposed into a homemade tractor. https://t.co/BDCzfTauWx
Okay, this is the first actually *good* Goodreads update in a long time!
Quarter stars may be taking it a bit to far, but I've always wanted a half-star option.
Oh gosh, worlds colliding here. Larry Fitzgerald was still playing the last time I watched the *other* kind of football. 😄 And a dash of Monument Valley!
(Going to watch the match on replay tomorrow so nobody spoil it for me.)
@ScottMcCreaWest@John_Barach She was one of my earliest favorites! I've read over two dozen of her books, and have a few vintage hardcovers in my personal collection.
@John_Barach@ScottMcCreaWest Bower: Chip of the Flying U, Skyrider, Fool's Goal, Rim O' the World.
(I actually edited a collection of her public-domain short stories some years back: https://t.co/Fhrs7Y1uiI)
@John_Barach@ScottMcCreaWest Johnson: The Hanging Tree (collection, not just the title story), Indian Country
Rhodes: Stepsons of Light, The Trusty Knaves. Some of his best short fiction is in The Rhodes Reader, ed. W.H. Hutchinson.
Schaefer: definitely Shane, also his short fiction
