🇺🇸 Hackers Stole Meta’s Software Code — And Exposed a Security Failure Inside the Company

Meta has confirmed a breach involving some of its private GitHub repositories after attackers used a stolen employee login to access the company’s software code and data linked to roughly 1,500 people. Most of those affected are Meta employees in the United States.

But the biggest concern is not just what hackers stole. It is what they found sitting inside those repositories.

Personal information had been stored there in violation of Meta’s own company policy. Meta says 99% of the stolen material was business data, primarily software code, while the remaining 1% was personal information. Some records that appeared to contain personal data were actually synthetic or anonymised test data.

Think about that: a company responsible for some of the world's biggest social platforms had sensitive information in a place where its own rules said it should not be stored.

Meta has cut off the attackers’ access, involved law enforcement and GitHub, rotated exposed secrets, and begun notifying affected individuals. Those people are being offered credit monitoring and dark-web monitoring services.

Meta says its internal systems were not breached and that the incident did not result from a vulnerability in a Meta product. The access came through stolen employee credentials.

That distinction matters, but it does not erase the underlying security failure: protecting a company’s data requires more than preventing outsiders from breaking in. It also requires making sure sensitive information is not stored in the wrong place in the first place.

The real question is this: if a company’s own policies prohibit storing personal data in these repositories, how did that data end up there?

NVIDIA's Open Agent Safety Platform combines OpenShell, an open-source runtime that restricts what an AI agent can access, with an optional hardware-based watchdog called Sentry running on BlueField-4.

NVIDIA says Sentry can quarantine agents that try to cross their boundaries in milliseconds.

But there's an important catch: an agent can still cause damage while staying completely inside the permissions you gave it.

AI agent security isn't just about stopping an escape. It's about deciding what the agent should have been allowed to do in the first place.
