If you pass by four-year-old Roman Butzlaff's house in Concord, N.C., he will surely greet you with a wave and a "hey."
But what began as a friendly gesture became a bond that drew together his neighborhood. @SteveHartmanCBS reports on the "family" that Roman built one wave at a time. https://t.co/PeYT6DqlTl
Charlie Hicks ate his lunch and dinner at the Shrimp Basket in Pensacola, Florida, every day for 10 years. When he suddenly stopped showing up, the chef went looking for him – ultimately saving his life. @SteveHartmanCBS is On the Road.
A retired police officer found a new calling with a mobile laundry bus, washing clothes for people who are homeless and offering dignity, one load at a time. @SteveHartmanCBS is On the Road in Maryland.
Never heard of an axolotl? Meet the tiny salamander with superhero powers, and the 6-year-old who raised $1,000 to help Harvard scientists study its limb-regrowing magic. @SteveHartmanCBS is On the Road in Boston.
Student lunch debt has reached nearly $200 million nationwide. For many families, it can add up quickly, but CBS News' @JanetShamlian met two people who are doing their part to help those struggling to pay.
The powerful images of families reuniting following the Israel-Hamas peace plan stirred emotional memories for a California woman whose reunion with her father, who was captured in Vietnam, was captured in an iconic image. @SteveHartmanCBS is On the Road.
I express my profound closeness to the Palestinian people in Gaza, who continue to live in fear and to survive in unacceptable conditions, forced once again from their own lands. Before Almighty God, who commanded “Thou shalt not kill,” and throughout human history, every person always has an inviolable dignity, to be respected and upheld. I renew my appeal for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and a negotiated diplomatic solution, in full respect of international humanitarian law. I invite everyone to join my heartfelt prayer that a dawn of peace and justice may soon arise.
Amanda Jones relies on limited SNAP benefits and a local food pantry to feed herself and 30 families in rural Georgia, where child food insecurity rates are among the highest in the country. As federal cuts loom, food banks are bracing for increased demand and leaning on volunteers and donations to fill the gap.
A nonprofit that delivered fresh produce to food deserts across three states is scaling back after the USDA abruptly canceled $1 billion in pandemic-era food programs. Advocates warn the cuts could hurt farmers and leave vulnerable families hungry.
War does not solve problems; on the contrary, it amplifies them and inflicts deep wounds on the history of peoples, which take generations to heal. No armed victory can compensate for the pain of mothers, the fear of children, or stolen futures. May diplomacy silence the weapons! May nations chart their futures with works of peace, not with violence and bloodstained conflicts!
Today more than ever, humanity cries out and calls for peace. This is a cry that requires responsibility and reason, and it must not be drowned out by the din of weapons or the rhetoric that incites conflict. Every member of the international community has a moral responsibility to stop the tragedy of war before it becomes an irreparable chasm. There are no “distant” conflicts when human dignity is at stake.
The powerful weapons used in modern wars threaten to lead us to a barbarism greater than that of the past. In the name of human dignity and international law, I repeat to those in positions of responsibility what Pope Francis used to say: 'War is always a defeat!' And with Pope Pius XII: 'Nothing is lost with peace. Everything can be lost with war.'
The night 18-year-old Mykale Baker graduated from high school, he picked up a last-minute shift at the Burger King where he works after noticing how swamped his coworkers were. @SteveHartmanCBS is On the Road with how the teen was rewarded for his "Whopper" of a work ethic.
