WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED?

Three days earlier, Alex had received an email claiming that he needed to verify his Instagram account. At first glance, everything looked legitimate. The message featured Instagram’s branding, displayed a familiar logo, and even referred to a recent post he had shared.

The email included a link directing him to a page where he was asked to log in again to confirm his identity.

Without suspecting anything unusual, Alex entered his Instagram username and password.

That single decision gave the attackers an opportunity to compromise his account.

Within hours, they had taken several actions:

Changed the email address and phone number associated with his account.
Enabled two-factor authentication using their own device.
Published promotional content advertising cryptocurrency giveaways and fake free iPhone offers.
Sent suspicious direct messages containing malicious links to his followers.

When Alex attempted to log back in, Instagram rejected his password. He tried resetting it, but the recovery codes were being sent to a phone number he didn’t recognize.

He was completely locked out.

The account he had spent years building, with 18,000 followers, personal photographs, business connections, and valuable memories, was suddenly beyond his control.

THE DAMAGE WENT BEYOND LOSING ACCESS

For Alex, the problem wasn’t simply that he couldn’t log in. The consequences began affecting his personal relationships and professional reputation.

Clients contacted him to ask why his account was promoting suspicious cryptocurrency schemes. Friends tagged him in scam posts, wondering whether his account had been compromised. Some followers received fraudulent messages that appeared to come directly from him.

HOW HE EVENTUALLY RECOVERED HIS ACCOUNT

After providing the requested information and completing the necessary verification steps, he eventually regained access.

His first priority was securing the account and preventing another incident.

Here’s what he did:

1. Changed his password.
He created a long, unique password that he wasn’t using on any other website or application.

2. Strengthened two-factor authentication.
He configured two-factor authentication using an authenticator app, where available, rather than relying solely on SMS verification.

3. Reviewed active login sessions.
He checked the devices and locations associated with his account and logged out of sessions he didn’t recognize.
