A thread of my preservation “To Be Read” stack that just gets bigger. Let’s start with Black Landscapes Matter by Walter Hood of @HDHoodDesign and @grace_tada
Only 2% of architects are Black. Paul Williams. Vertner Woodson Tandy. J. Max Bond Jr. Philip Freelon. David Adjaye. These Black architects’ names should be familiar. On my TBR is Black Built by Paul Wellington, a fantastic book exploring the work of Black architects.

Another book in my stack is by one of hip hop architecture’s leading theorists and thinkers. Can’t wait to sit down with this! Grab your own copy of Hip-Hop Architecture by @sekou21!
This is the Queen's Stepwell in Gujarat, India, built nearly 1,000 years ago.
It is beautiful, but it isn't unique — India is filled with hundreds of stepwells just like it.
Here is the story of the world's most extraordinary underground architecture...
Our quarterly newsletter is here! In this issue, a Freedom Colony Feature from one of our Atlas contributors, a Free Cemetery Mapping Drawing, our new affiliation with a National Network, a calendar of Black History Month Events, and More! https://t.co/patH48wFbY
What I do is all about telling the full story of our collective historical narrative as a nation. To elevate untold stories and sites of Black achievement and activism. As we begin #BlackHistoryMonth to the censorship of those stories it is so important to tell them anyway
.@SavingPlaces tells @RobinGivhan, “What we're seeing in Florida is certainly disappointing. And it speaks to the ongoing fragility of recognizing that our nation once had a racist past. And that, that history and that legacy is pervasive in all aspects of modern society."
.@SavingPlaces tells @RobinGivhan, “We're hopeful that by interpreting the historic Black church's civil rights legacy ... That they can harness the power of those legacies to engage a new generation of activists within their walls to carry their legacies forward."
.@SavingPlaces says, “Women are at the forefront of leading preservation campaigns … They are the daily stewards of American history. We hope that the fullness of their contributions will be seen and respected for the ways that they contribute to preserving American history."
.@SavingPlaces tells @RobinGivhan, “It's critically important that we preserve the physical evidence of our past ... That we preserve the profound stories that are embodied in the walls, landscapes and cemeteries stewarded by African American churches."
.@SavingPlaces tells @RobinGivhan, “Our purpose is to leave a lasting and permanent contribution on the American landscape. And to uplift African American struggle and achievement that is foundational to understanding the full American story."

Everything you could have said about the human condition & how to improve it, you said. With courageous action.
Will we see in 2023 that honoring you = more than statues & quotes?

1. Millau Viaduct, France (2004) - the world's tallest bridge.
As a tribute to all enslaved people buried in cemeteries in unmarked graves, artist Craig Walsh illuminated trees with faces to honour their souls
