I know, I know, I have a bad at-ETUDE. #BadumTss

I had gotten to the point where I was either going to play the violin much better or I was going to break it over my knee.

[Ellen Taaffe Zwilich @EllenZwilich]

Personifying the horn as a character makes sense to me because a music piece would represent an adventure or journey the instrument (or the-

You can hear the contrast between the different tonalities present in the piece, going from "warm" and "soulful" to "bright" and "brash".

[Ellen Taaffe Zwilich @EllenZwilich]

I consider all of these sounds good examples of the character of the horn. :) #HornsArePeopleToo #SaveTheHorns

This "warmth" is quickly changed with a crescendo to climax in measures twelve and thirteen into a “bright” and “brash” sound (as stated).

In the seventh measure, the sound of the music shifts to “warm” and “soulful,” as written in the score.

[Ellen Taaffe Zwilich @EllenZwilich]

Using a minor tonality, or as written in the score, “husky”, the sound begins the work in the concerto.

I describe this concerto as a tone poem with the horn as the “Hero," with it's character showing in the opening measures.

I believe "classical” ideas (contrast, development, and return)are ingrained in one's mind, which affects the way they perceive such pieces.

[Ellen Taaffe Zwilich @EllenZwilich]

As you may have noticed, the piece is made up of a fast-slow-fast form, which I consider very "classical".

[Ellen Taaffe Zwilich @EllenZwilich]

The third movement is made up of an allegro.

[Ellen Taaffe Zwilich @EllenZwilich]

The second movement is made up of a tempo giusto ('strict' or 'suitable' time)

[Ellen Taaffe Zwilich @EllenZwilich]

The first movement is made up of slow, allegro (brisk in tempo), and cadenza (solo performed at the end of a piece).

[Ellen Taaffe Zwilich @EllenZwilich]

Another example of contrast in my works would be in my piece, The Concerto for Horn and String Orchestra. It is made up of three movements.

...but something even more satisfying about a return. These formal procedures have been used for a long time because they resonate with us

[Ellen Taaffe Zwilich @EllenZwilich]

The notion of the return of something, an ABA idea, is valid because there is something satisfying about a contrast...

...As my music had become progressively tonal and consonant.
