👇 The answer to the question on the board is simple: NO — it’s impossible.
We cannot improve attendance through one-off training, CPD days, or tick-box sessions.
Real change happens when schools shift to an ongoing cycle of professional learning and developing expertise!
Co-regulation is not about doing something to a pupil. At its root, it's about positive relationships & how one nervous system responds to another.Pupils who did not receive co-regulation develop self-regulation skills to react or suppress uncomfortable feelings & emotions.🧠🌱
Schools should be flexible and creative on attendance.
We get so many calls on our Parents’ Helpline about anxiety-related absences.
We have heard of situations where pupils have travelled to school but were too anxious to leave the car when they got there. In one instance a teacher got into the car with them, had a chat and arranged for some work they could do at home instead.
Working with the pupil and understanding how they are feeling can help to manage non-attendance with the family and reduce anxiety for the pupil and the parents.
Parents – do you agree?
Two of the most important needs in educational settings for pupils are safety & connection.
SAFETY means a secure & well regulated nervous system. CONNECTION. Children have a profound need for connection.
When they feel safe & connected, their body shifts into well-being mode.🌱🧠
Understanding the window of tolerance can help both pupils & staff. Supporting pupils social & emotional skills by understanding their challenges & support them to learn to process emotions in healthy ways by teaching them to help their brain & body to feel safe again.🧠🌱
Masking is a huge issue in schools & it can go so unoticed before its too late, leading to emotional crashes. It may seem that everything in fine in school.Quiet, compliant, but underneath, they are overwhelmed ,anxious & exhausted. At home, tears, frustration, panic.🧠🌱
What if all schools changed the name "School Behaviour Policies" to "Positive Relationship Policies" instead...what a change in thinking and ideology for the better that would be.🧠🌱
🌍 We’re building the world’s largest systems-led approach to school attendance.
Already working across the UK, USA, UAE & Wales, schools & agencies are uniting to improve outcomes for CYP & communities.

It is biologically impossible for a pupil to absorb or process information in educational settings if they are anxious, scared ,worried , or afraid.
All of their lower brain functions are focused on coping and surviving, not learning or growing.
Basic neuroscience. 🧠🌱
Emotional regulation takes lots of relational wealth, practice, patience & self compassion.
It's not just a case that pupils need to be "taught learning behaviours."The first step is taking care of our own feelings. This allows us to co- regulate effectively. 🧠🌱
2.The classroom offers a safe base.
When a pupil doesn't feel safe, their nervous is activated & their cortex goes offline. When a pupil feel, heard, safe, understood through a place of relationships & regulation, only then will the cortex be accessible

📉 Attendance down. Anxiety up.
A British Psychology study found pupils with strong social connections had lower stress, anxiety & fatigue during uncertainty.
✅ Belonging protects
✅ Connection drives recovery
✅ Relationships matter
Attendance starts with feeling seen.
What did you notice today?
What will you notice tomorrow?
How are you contributing—every day—to an Inclusive Attendance culture?
When a child is late, don’t just ask where they were.
Ask what held them back.
That’s where change begins.
De-escalation starts with trust. Students only open up when they feel safe—here’s how to build that trust before conflict arises.

When a young person is in a high state of dysregulation, their logic & language are low. We cannot reason & reflect in a meltdown. We need to connect, hold space & be
Young people cannot reason when their emotions are not regulated. 🧠🌱
After our physiological needs are met,we need to biologically attach. We have brain circuitry wired for attachment (limbic).Within schools, attachment should come before everything. It's all about attachment. For pupis, it's an absolute necessity. Everything else will follow.🧠🌱
