It's pretty depressing that a trans poet won the Artur C Clarke award this year - Harry Josephine Giles with Deep Wheel Orcadia - and itโs NOWHERE to be seen in all the bookshops. Seems like this is a perfect opp for trans visibility in a male-centric genre and we've blown it.

Good writing is demonstrating empathy and being kind to your reader. Thanks to the student who gave me this excellent metaphor. No doubt I'll be passing it on to others.
In this thread, I'll be sharing an anecdote about signposting language. I'll then go on to explore how this might be applied more generally as a useful device in academic writing.
It's exactly the same with making an argument in essay writing. Don't trust the reader will follow you if you go walking off: tell them where you're going to go and why, remind them again when you're going off, and review where you've been when you get there.
The only thing I don't enjoy about sneakily streaming TV series from my phone while the baby naps on me is the sudden reflection of my earnest little eyes staring back when the credits roll ๐ถ
Doing my accounting for the year my daughter was born: implicit in between the repeated studio rent and campus car park outgoings is the lack of making time being an artist and the teaching sessions away from my 2 month old baby. What a year. #matrescence
