Sometimes he won’t reply to my texts, but more often than not he’ll reply days, if not hours later with a long message that in some way will put me down, suggest I’ve miscommunicated with him, or give a very closed response.

Sometimes at this stage, if it's not blending well, you might be able to get away with applying a small amount of fresh acrylic paint over the mostly dried acrylic/isopropyl solution to blend it a bit better.
