I leave Woodoaks energised and inspired - the potential for the farm to become a bustling hub for change in the community is huge.
Big thanks to @roselewis + @SueLacey6 for your time and for being fab.
p.s. don't forget to go back and pick those oyster mushrooms! (End)
Engaging the community is key to the process. @roselewis surveyed locals & their aspirations were affordable, plastic-free, local food
“Through local supply chains you have opportunity to have farmer-friendly pricing & citizen-friendly pricing by cutting out the middle chunk”(5)
@FarmWoodoaks recently put out an open call for aspiring food and farming entrepreneurs to join the team - they've had over 80 pitches ranging from forest schools to horticulture to mushroom farming to sustainable fibre production for clothes - watch this space! (7)
"...on top of this 300 acres, you have the opportunity to create more diverse foods and create livelihoods for lots more people. It's the small, mixed farm mentality without a central farmer - engaging community right at the beginning to come on the journey with us." (4)
The goal is to stack enterprises for multiple benefits, @roselewis told me:
“The farm currently employs 1 person, produces 3 arable crops that go into global supply chains. The 250,000 local people don’t get any benefit from that production. If you layer enterprises..(cont) (3)
The vision is to create a vibrant food & farming hub, produce sustainable food working in tandem with nature, & prioritise local food chains.
Today a crack team of volunteers replanted a hedge torn out 60 years ago, returning 15 Acre Field back to its original 15 acres (2)
...the way Chris farms seems a long way from the rewilding / sustainable intensification debates - here food production and nature co-exist, in a 'beautifully shaggy' way.
Ta for having Chris! (End)
🚴 In the saddle once again for @FFC_Commission#LandUnlockedTour. We're hearing stories from people & communities across the UK taking climate action in the run up to COP.
Met with the lovely Chris @Woodland_Valley farm to chat beavers and multifunctional land use... (1)
"Land can sequester a hell of a lot of carbon if you let it"
My takeaway: boosting nature and food production aren't mutually exclusive - cleverly designed multifunctional land uses provide great food whilst boosting natural capital and providing ecosystem services... (9)
“We need to go beyond the ‘right trees in the right places’ strapline…for us its more like ‘the right trees in the right places doing the right thing with the right people to look after them.” (end)

First stop...@TheWoodsPresent - social, economic and ecologically-minded forestry (1)
Alex and @TheWoodsPresent team have created a place for people to reconnect with the woods and woodland culture, to plant trees, help woodlands flourish, and a place for people involved in the timber industry to come together and collaborate (6)
