Dallas has openly put Jamie Benn's name out on the trade board this afternoon. Benn's point per game rate last year was the lowest he's posted since his rookie campaign. However, he's not too far removed from his 87-point Art Ross winning season.
But to avoid burying the lead: PK Subban will be heading from Nashville to Florida in what I hear is a retained salary transaction. I believe that this deal involves Mark Pysyk, who @Boob__McKenzie noted earlier was on the move.
These becoming the first and third largest cap recapture penalties seen in the league based on the size of the penalty per season. LA holds the #2 spot (Mike Richards - $1.32m through 2020) and New Jersey sits in 4th (Ilya Kovalchuk - $250k through 2025).
Buffalo is likely to be quiet on the UFA hunt going forward. They're happy with their recent trade acquisitions (Haula and Kase) and don't plan to make any flashy UFA signings.
Trade news: Vancouver is said to have struck a deal for a local guy to play in their middle-6. Signs are pointing to a current western conference trade partner moving on from an RFA.
I shouldn't leave out Eberle, Hayes, Simmonds, or Maroon out either. Obviously Panarin is in a class of his own, but there's a lot of quality players to fill out a roster currently slated for UFA status.
Some consolation prizes to people who miss out on Panarin could include Nyqvist, Zuccarello, Pavelski, Dzingel, Williams, Lee, Connolly, Ferland, Chiasson, Johansson, Donskoi, Panik...
Some guys in this group will scare some off because they're 30+: Zuccarello, Pavelski, and Williams. Williams in particular might be ready to retire. Another 30+ year old winger who may sign another 1 year contract: Thomas Vanek.
Word is that the latest high bid on Panarin is now $12m AAV on a 7 year contract. He will be able to sign a contract with any team in the league on Saturday at noon EST.
@Boob__McKenzie To follow up: Marner's camp is reportedly very willing to listen to an offer sheet in the neighborhood of 5 yrs / $10m AAV.
One has to wonder too if Brayden Point might be the target of a similar offer sheet.
@Boob__McKenzie I've heard that a few GMs are thinking about sending a 5 year / 10.5m AAV offer sheet to Marner. That would cost a team two 1sts, a 2nd, and a 3rd round pick in compensation.
I've heard that one GM asked an agent to re-negotiate a contract signed this summer because the cap number was lower than expected. Take note GMs: all player contracts come with a "no take-backsies" clause.
