A fascinating piece of North Myrtle Beach history 🐋
In March 1986, a humpback whale washed ashore near Ocean Drive, drawing thousands of people to the beach to witness the rare event.
At the time, local legislator Sen. Dick Elliott worked to ensure the whale’s remains stayed in South Carolina with hopes they would eventually be displayed for the public.
While the skeleton was never ultimately exhibited, the story remains a memorable part of North Myrtle Beach history.
