@HedgieMarkets This is cartoonish levels of villainy.
Straight up evil.
He might be able to bamboozle a few VC's, but I have serious doubts that the market for this is big enough to recover R&D costs, much less turn a profit.
The only question that matters to datacenters in space is: Can you remove heat in sufficient quantity per unit of time?
Remember, radiation is the only option in space. And both the energy production and energy consumption create heat. Then you have to radiate that heat somewhere.
The question is whether you can make a satellite that has sufficient heat radiation, and energy generation, and compute, and can be launched up the gravity well. At all.
If each DC was launched as components and assembled in orbit then launch mass is less of a problem, although that blows apart the weight/energy cost math. And now you have additional construction cost/mass.
Which is why Elon wants to put up each satellite in a single launch. But now you are fully subject to the tyranny of the rocket equation.
Which means that there is an upper limit on how much compute each satellite can contain. Physics is the entire determining factor of that upper limit.
Economics only comes into play when deciding whether or not the amount of compute mass per launch is sufficient relative to the cost of putting the necessary support systems in orbit. And that is a simple comparison of costs for on-orbit FLOPS versus terrestrial FLOPS.
It's hard to see how the economics of on-orbit compute beats terrestrial compute any time soon.
In what way is this not an Alexa?
Alexa has been around for over ten years and the market for in-home/on-body surveillance devices has been pretty much maxed out.
Who the target market for this?
Most of what people do on their phones is passive scrolling. And at its core this is just a phone. But without the ability to passively scroll through content.
IMO, this will end like all of MSFT's previous attempts is this space.
In failure.
@r_u_thinking@4nt1p4tt3rn I'll be looking at used hardware in a year or two. Post AI-boom crash. Should be a lot of first-rate gear on fire sale by then.
The word "Minimal" is doing some heaving lifting here and I knew it when I wrote it.
I have a surplus AMD 5970X with 256GB of RAM and just enough PCIe4 slots that I could jam 2x Arc Pro B70s into to get the required amount of VRAM for Gemma 31B Dense. The surplus box cost me 7.5k originally and the GPUs cost about 2.5k.
It's not the most optimal setup, but it should be enough for that model. The PCIe4 bus is going to limit transfer rates.
If money were no object, I'd spend the 14k to get 2x RTX PRO 5000's, but now we're talking about 20k+. And if I wanted to go with a new WRX50 TR setup, now we're pushing 30k with a short stick.
But in general, I agree. Under 20k, surplus hardware is going to be involved somewhere.
@cosmin_mih90678@HedgieMarkets I'm still on a PRU plan so I'm doing an Apples-to-Apples comparison.
I've also seen some evidence that there are bugs in the usage math for the new billing model that make it look worse than it should be.
@johnloeber A large part of the problem is the focus on memory tests, time trials, and brain teasers.
All three prioritize rote memorization over technical acumen.
Which leads to an over representation of memory champions who can't solve problems they haven't memorized the answers to.
@jmfletcherkz@davepl1968 Paying extra for something that used to work for free is the opposite of progress and advancement.
Not to mention the system stability problems that such third-party tools can introduce.
@CynicalPublius Half the country just got here 5-10 years ago.
And half of those who didn't absolutely hate the country.
The lack of enthusiasm is not surprising.
The "burn it all down bros are bad people" argument has been bothering me for a while and finally figured out why.
In point #1 you assert that they have never built anything from scratch. But it's clear you never have either.
I say that because I spent my early years building houses. Do you know what the very first thing you do when building a house is?
Clear the land.
That's right. You wreak absolute destruction on everything above the soil. And then you dig into the soil and push it around to create the necessary conditions upon which a solid house can be built.
And if you do not do this, your house will collapse before you can even finish the framing.
All creation is preceded by the forceful removal of the chaos that came before it. And the more force that is applied, the quicker you can progress to the building phase.
This is the most basic command of natural law.
-----
Point 2: You assert that they have never administered any thriving societies or institutions over the years.
The people you are talking about are typically some form of Christian. For example, RETVRN is a Catholic program, which is the among the oldest religious institutions on Earth. I would argue that the average RETVRNer is far more qualified for leadership positions than the mental cockroaches that are currently leading the society and its institutions. At least they have the background and history of a 2000-year-old institution to draw on.
-----
Point 3: As opposed to the live-and-let-live tolerance of the blue-haired Islamo-Commies?
At some point you're going to have to decide which group of people you want wielding power over society. Because somebody will. And the Islamo-Commies are desperately chasing that power. Would you rather it be the group with Christian ethics and history or the Islamo-Commies?
-----
Point 4: Whose definition of "deranged" are we using?
You assert that they are this way, but you have provided no definition of what "conscience mechanism" you think they should be using instead.
They, rightly or wrongly, view themselves as locked in an existential war against the forces of Chaos itself, and they have determined that maximum force must be applied to save their civilization. Just as the house builder in Point 1 does.
I understand that you may view it differently. But that makes your argument one of opinion, and not an argument as to the fact of their mental state.

Imagine if the Founding Fathers had said "We can't shoot the Redcoats! Think of the institutions that they administer for us!"

@Keltic_Spirit The sad thing is that this is technically legal because the 1990 INA made it possible to AOS from anything to anything else.
The fraud is telling his clients to lie to the USG about why they are AOSing.
This is a violation of his Bar Association ethics rules. Take his license.
Most of these businesses are pass-through skimming operations where the minority owner will take 10%+ off the top and subcontract out the actual work, typically to white male owned businesses.
The specific purpose of this law is to ensure that the SWaM class subjugates the disfavored class while providing the SWaM class with a male subsidized sinecure that requires no risk to itself.
You can simply decline to bid the contact.
Just ask if the contact is a subcontract for the state.
Yes, it will hurt to not get that income
It is the only way to prevent your enslavement to those who hate you.
It is existential to the survival of our civilization that the government suffer for their blatant discrimination against white men.
