Had a great launch to our #JoyfulJohnston Institute! Started the day with a poverty simulation from @JustEconomicsNC , then led a training to enhance our work in historically responsive literacy. Special guest @Dr_Rob_Jackson shared some words of wisdom to kick off our new year!
We are lucky to get to work with Bryan Tompkins at @USFWSSoutheast to help us transform our empty spaces into vibrant sanctuaries for pollinators. This was a great hands on experience that teaches our students about environmental stewardship. Im thankful for this partnership!
Two years later and so much learning! Thank you @RelayGSE for helping us create structures and system to transform our work at JES! It’s been an amazing experience! #NCILA#NCDPI
Excited from a fantastic PD session led by our curriculum team! Starting with reflections from our book talk on Unearthing Joy, we delved into the next step of academic monitoring and how to give specific feedback to empower all students and ensure everyone succeeds!
Kinders at JES today mapped out their butterflies from the Symbolic Monarch Migration Project. We #appsmashed@ChatterPixIt and @padlet to create this amazing map of all the butterflies they collected from North America!
Morning spent in instructional rounds observing teachers implementing our school wide goal of actively monitoring students progress to ensure alignment between instruction and learning outcomes. Powerful commitment to student success! @Dr_Rob_Jackson@JennReed23
Thank you Johnston Elementary School rockstars for joining me at the WCU Equity Summit to tell the beautiful story of how scholarship and practice unite to create equitable outcomes for students. #GreaterHeights@Ellis04Katie
With my mother. Daddy’s funeral.
He wasn’t assassinated because he wanted his children to be judged “by the content of their character.”
But for dismantling racism, poverty & militarism.
He wanted corrective measures to eradicate racism, not the delusion that it doesn’t exist.
Our district ML and Math coach joined forces this week partnering seamlessly with teachers & administration. Together, we analyzed data, devised lesson plans, and championed every learner during PLCs. Thrilled to witness the impact of teamwork on student success!
Had a blast at the Girls on the Run practice 5K today! Seeing these smiles after a long day reminded me why programs like this are so vital. Empowering girls through running is not just about the miles but building confidence through accomplishments. #GirlsOnTheRun#EmpowerGirls
Inspired by the privilege of coaching at Johnston. The remarkable dedication of our staff, the boundless love for these kids, and the relentless pursuit of excellence in daily instruction fill my heart with gratitude. So thankful ❤️ #BCS#NCPublicschools
@lindaschultzie @MJLiben Interesting! I’d love to hear your thoughts on that. I’d also like to see if anyone has overlapped the standards on the rope to see the alignment- that would be a helpful visual!
Over the past weeks, I've been with new teachers, following the 'Get Better Faster' framework. Building solid routines and procedures will pave the way for classroom excellence. The focus on observing, scripting out routines, role playing, and on-the-spot coaching is powerful!
An excellent blog from @ReadingShanahan.
Leadership (principals and coaches!) can make a BIG difference in students’ literacy outcomes.

Thank you @BNHC1984 so much for coming! Everyone was talking all day about how much they enjoyed your presentation! We will definitely need you back again!
The JES PD started off strong! Dr. Hinnant-Crawford's talk on fostering student genius via equity pedagogies resonates deeply. Her presentation was powerful in reminding us the importance of humanizing practices and starting with the genius in every child.
@BNHC1984@JennReed23
@SherylCrow@Adopt_classroom I’m so thankful for any support! I’m an elementary instructional coach that works at a school with 100% free lunch. Our teachers work so hard and I want to create a space with supplies and snacks for their meetings. Anything helps! https://t.co/uUG0n8PGXy
Summer reading got even more powerful! Captivated by "Fix Injustice, Not Kids," Gorski & Swallwell's book on high-impact equity leadership. Bringing reimagined policies, just access, joy, and sustainability to our leadership team convos this week. @EquityLiteracy@KatySwalwell
