I am persistent in the hope that the broad coalition fighting Trump doesn’t come to resemble him. Nietzsche’s abyss, etc. But Dem voters feel like “when they go low, we go high” burned them. And now they want to fight fire with fire. Republicans have given up any moral high ground, not just with Trump, but with so many racist/anti-semitic/corrupt GOP candidates over the last decade. Dem voters want to play by the same rules they see Republicans getting to play by. I think it’s the road to civic ruin. But I also understand it emotionally. Republicans will try to use this to retroactively justify all the moral accommodations they made over the last 10 years (see Dems do it too!), rather than reckon with how their accommodations of Trump and candidates like him brought us to this dismal point.
