A few people have asked me whether my review of James Ellroy's Red Sheet contains spoilers.
The answer is no, absolutely not. I hate spoilers and I'm careful not to include any in my reviews. So treat yourself to a spoiler-free review of the novel: https://t.co/7rXZVkjHjL
@CrozierMark In Ellroy's eyes that descriptive quality was overripe and reliant on metaphor. His job was to break away from that at a time when most other crime writers were imitating it.
@John___Phillips I love that line. And she did too. She put Ellroy in touch with Nelle, who one of the most gorgeous and delightful women he dated. Fond memories of interviewing her during lockdown.
"When Nellie quizzed him on his choice of author's name, he replied that James Ellroy sounded 'simple, concise and dignified—things I am not.'"

@CrozierMark Chandler is brilliant, but I totally disagree with your assessment of Ellroy. Chandler never came close to the historical revisionism that Ellroy achieved.
Thank you to everyone who responded so positively to my review of James Ellroy's Red Sheet, and here's a little reminder that if you want to read a book that puts all of Ellroy's life and work in context treat yourself to a copy of my biography of Ellroy Love Me Fierce in Danger.
@MurphMixer_X Bear in mind, he's an alcoholic and an addict. He cannot drink with safety, so maybe avoids a lot of other activity that can become too compulsive as well.
@Peterack6263 I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure he grew up to be a fine young man, regardless. He said something similar to the son of one of his Hollywood buddies, and the man's wife told him not to hang out with Ellroy ever again.
@ymo20241983 I had Zoom calls with him, although Helen set them up on her pc. He's fairly honest about his lifestyle, although he still benefits from technology in many ways.
@ellipsisTG He's always been admired by the Guardian, possibly because from abroad he is sometimes perceived as anti-US. They refused to run a review of my biography of him, despite the fact that their reviewer admired it and wanted to review it. Perhaps they thought I was too harsh on him.
