In September 1570 after the Cypriot capitol of Nicosia finally fell to the Turks after a long siege, something bizarre happened:

The ship holding roughly 800 female captives bound for enslavement in Constantinople exploded, killing all aboard.

According to legend, Maria Syglitiki (also known as Arnaude de Rocas) was aiding her father, a local count, and other soldiers on the front lines when the 3rd assault by the Turks finally took the city.

She sheltered with the wounded, including her mortally wounded father, in a church when she was found by the conquering Turks and told she was destined for enslavement in the Sultan's harem in Constantinople, which had been captured over a century before.

She and 800 others were marched from the town square to a ship where they conspired to do whatever it took rather than end up in concubinage to the Turks.

That night, as legend goes, Maria made her way to the ship's powder storage while the guards slept and lit the match, blowing the ship to pieces. The Turks got Cyprus but lost their usual and expected prize of women and children for s*xual slavery.

People have a funny way of downplaying incidents like this (and this is not at all an isolated incident), even claiming Turks were just intermarrying with "local women" when nothing could be further from the truth.

This is the 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker who randomly stabbed passersby in Austria, Villach on 15 February 2025.

A 14-year-old boy was killed and five others (young men) were wounded.

He was stopped by a delivery driver who rammed him with his car after seeing the attack. The attacker was arrested moments later.

Photos show him smiling and laughing as police confronted him, right after murdering a child in cold blood.

Austrian authorities confirmed this was an Islamist attack inspired by the Islamic State. The perpetrator had sworn allegiance to IS.

A woman walked 6 km to reach the police station with an iron chain locked around her neck.

On the evening of 10 June, the husband came home drunk. Asked to serve food, but the food was being prepared, so he lost his temper and started abusing his wife.

When she protested, he became even more angry.

He went outside, cut a thick tree branch, and then started beating her badly with the branch, along with kicks and slaps.

Late at night, she quietly left the house and started walking towards the police station.

But before she could reach the police, her husband spotted her near a temple. He stopped her, beat her again in public, and dragged her back home.

He put a heavy iron chain around her neck.

Then he tied the chain to a pillar inside the house and locked it with a padlock. He heated an iron rod on the gas stove until it became red hot. He then burnt her waist, hip and thigh with the hot rod.

The woman cried in pain.

For nearly 24 hours, she remained chained inside the house.

The husband wanted her to admit in front of the panchayat that she would never go to the police again. Out of fear, she pretended to agree.

The husband left the house to gather people for the panchayat.

She was alone at home. She noticed a heavy stone nearby and started hitting the lock and broke it.

She continued walking 6 kilometres until she finally reached the police station.

Case registered.

This is not a film script. It is the real-life story of Mangibai Tanwar, and of countless other women who still endure such cruelty today.
