This weekend I wrote an opinion piece for the Canberra times about what we need to do to move students to study Asian languages. It's in response to @SenatorWong's speech calling for Australia to increase its Asia capabilities. There is so much we can do!

Finally, thanks to @ourANU for stumping up for open access publishing, it is an incredibly valuable privilege! Also to @UNSWCanberra, where the article was conceived.
Wulan Dirgantoro, Papuan arts collective Udeido and I wrote an article together about Udeido's powerful work from 2021, The Koreri Projection. You can read it open access in the World Art Journal! https://t.co/9c06BT1JUp
Thanks to guest editors Yvonne Low, Phoebe Scott, and George Lau at World Art (@WeAreTandF), for putting together the special issue our article is included in: Rethinking Primitivisms in the Modern Art of Southeast Asia, full of fascinating articles.
@AdrianVickers5@ASAA Oh really! Not the full recommendations, but considerably more than in response to recent reports. As Virginia notes: "4,800 additional places in Asia-related courses ‘will have been created at a cost of around $39m p.a.’" Extraordinary, in retrospect.
My dear friend and mentor Em. Prof. Virginia Hooker on the integral, often overlooked, role of women in establishing the @asaa and Asian Studies in Aus. Esp. interesting: game-changing '88 Ingleson report which attracted both political support and funding https://t.co/gufCxsnKDL
Thanks to @acicisCD for keeping us up to date on the state of play in Indonesian language learning across Australia. Disappointing drop in VIC, long the stalwart provider of highly skilled VCE grads, but huge congrats to those students and teachers holding the line.
Data released last month by @VCAAedu shows that 348 students from 50 Victorian schools sat the VCE (Unit 4) Year 12 examination in Indonesian in 2023--down (10%) from 387 students from 51 schools in 2022.
In association with the 'On tradition: Contemporary Art from Indonesia' exhibition at 16albermarle Project Space and Delmar Gallery, Nth Maluku Hip Hop artist Presiden Tidore visited Sydney, @ANU_CHL and @UniMelb . Read about his philosophy and practice here! @MonikaWinarnita
This is a huge jump in numbers of WA yr 12 students! And 3 new schools delivering Indonesian language at this level. Congrats to studebts, teachers and their schools!
