STARMAN opinion When Starman first appeared in the SpaceX S-1 filing, I initially thought it was simply SpaceX revisiting one of the most iconic moments from the 2018 Falcon Heavy launch. The image of the Tesla Roadster, the spacesuit-wearing mannequin, and Earth in the background has always been one of the most memorable moments in SpaceX history. Since it was even included in the S-1 filing, I believed it had the potential to attract attention once again. However, Starman appeared again in the recent roadmap video, and this time SpaceX included the following line: “Grok, Imagine Starman across the universe.” What stands out to me is not simply that SpaceX reused an old image, but that the company continues to feature Starman in major communications. A single appearance could be dismissed as nostalgia. But when it shows up repeatedly in important materials such as the S-1 filing and the roadmap video, I think it carries a different meaning. When people think of a corporate mascot, they usually imagine a dog, cat, or some kind of animal character. But for a company like SpaceX, I believe a symbolic icon that represents the company's vision and philosophy can be far more important than a traditional mascot. To me, Starman is much more than a mannequin. It represents: The historic Falcon Heavy launch in 2018 The connection between Tesla and SpaceX Humanity's journey toward space The future narrative that SpaceX wants to present to the world Because of that, I wouldn't necessarily call Starman an official mascot. However, I do think it's reasonable to view it as a symbolic icon that SpaceX deliberately continues to showcase. The phrase: “Imagine Starman across the universe” also feels like more than a reference to the past. It presents Starman as a symbol of the future — something traveling beyond Earth and across the universe. In reality, the Tesla Roadster and Starman are still orbiting through space today, making them a unique and enduring symbol. Another point worth noting is that prediction markets have recently been assigning roughly a 50% probability to a potential Tesla–SpaceX merger. I believe that alone adds another layer of symbolic significance. If a Tesla–SpaceX combination ever becomes a serious topic again, I think the Tesla Roadster and Starman would naturally return to the spotlight. Ultimately, I don't see Starman as just an old meme or a historic photograph. I see it as a recurring symbol that SpaceX continues to bring back during important moments. For that reason, I believe Starman has the potential to remain relevant as a narrative for a long time. Personally, I think it may even be a stronger narrative than Asteroid.
