@KOJournals Both early 30s, around 185lbs, I think. Marciano enjoyed training, and was always in superb condition, which paid off in tough fights like this one.
Oscar Bonavena. From the brawler school of boxing. He was ranked 4th at the time. He did not do much after this fight, which was basically a boxing lesson given by Ali. Brothel owner Joe Conforte picked up his contract, Oscar starting carrying on with Joe’s wife Sally, then tried to nudge Joe out. Joe’s man Ross Brymer shot Oscar from 100 yards away (at the Mustang) with a 30.06. He plead self defense! He did 18 months because Oscar had made himself very unpopular around Reno. Nobody was sorry to see him go. Oscar generally spent his time picking fights and administrating beatings. He had a huge head, and liked to bring it close to intimidate people. He spoke very good English, had let his hair grow long and could often be seen wearing bib overalls. He had an entourage of two or three, and did not seem to keep in shape. Ross Brymer did his time, but died of lung cancer, a heavy smoker. He was generally well liked in the Reno/Sparks area. Conforte fled to Brazil, (IRS after him) and lived to an old age. He had started as a cab driver/pimp in Oakland. That’s another story
The mob bankrolled casinos, because banks would not lend the money. Holding stock in a casino, btw, required a gaming control investigation in those days. The potential shareholder had to pay the cost. So the mob bankrolled the Flamingo, Desert Inn, etc then simply took over the operation. As far as “skimming” at the Flamingo, Bugsy Seigal simply stole the money, or most of it. His fellow mobsters were reluctant to move against him, because they were afraid of the consequences if they missed. but in the end they had no choice, and his whacking was well planned. Anyway, nobody was sorry to see him go. The “skimming” was more for the mob operated Havana casinos, where they had to conceal the theft from Bautista, So no, this Godfather scene makes no sense. But still a great movie.
Doffing and donning. See the Fair Labor Standards Act. The Act was passed in the 1930s, but the doffing and donning was part of a later addition called “portal to portal”. There was a significant FLSA portal to portal case in San Francisco, btw, in which the Alcatraz guards were not paid until they stepped off the launch that brought them to the island, and were off the clock as soon as they boarded at the end of their shift. The guards prevailed and collected backpay for years of being shorted. Anyway, in this case, the State law may well be even stricter than the FLSA (Federal).
When I was a kid in the 50s we got dressed up to go to Oakland. Shopped at Capwells, ate at Bertolas on Telegraph. Traveled from the 16th St train depot, still beautiful even in its current decrepit state. Yes, Oakland was a destination. There were 20 murders in 1960. How many last year? 90? Same population, same 25% black. What happened? Answer:
1. Less church
2. More drugs
3. Black militants
4. White liberals
@war24182236 Drone looking for visitors in MAGA hats. Mayor’s office must reach out to the Hondos and reassure them that they can continue to operate as icons of San Francisco, like cable cars.
@jonathanreports That building will sit, deteriorate, be vandalized, and year after year it will be an eyesore. A tribute to failure and TDS. Congress will have responsibility, but will never agree on a restoration plan.
York trained on the 03 Springfield, but was issued a 1917 Enfield when he got to Europe. He preferred the 03. He spent his money on schooling for “mountain boys and girls”. The IRS went after him in one of the most embarrassing actions in our history. Congress intervened finally. York is buried with his people in Pall Mall TN. LBJ sent the family a letter, but mostly his passing went unnoticed.
@endless_real Boardwalk Empire has so much going for it. Superb sets. Attention to detail. Top
notch acting, (except for Pitt). But a 5’5” Capone? No. Total miscasting of Graham. If you want to know about prohibition, Boardwalk Empire is superior to the Ken Burns documentary.
LBJ was brought up to believe Christians should always help Jews. So when the 6 Day War was brewing he authorized U2 flights to target Egyptian air assets for the IDF. He also authorized weapons shipments. And he sent Liberty to the area to gather intel for the IDF. The vessel was transferred from Navy to JCS control, and foolishly sent into the area without its escort. After the Israel false flag attack, there were plenty of reasons for both the US and Israel to cover it up.
@future42org They should combine their anti-ICE, pro illegal immigration, anti sex trafficking and pimping marches. Pro and anti law enforcement in the same march.
LBJ sent Liberty to the area to provide intel to the IDF. He also authorized U2 flights to assist IDF in targeting Egyptian air assets. Israel Sec Defense Dayan noted that Liberty did not have its usual escort, and was perfect for a false flag, to bring the US more actively into the war. IDF could have easily captured the nearly unarmed vessel, but that would have spoiled the opportunity. Rescue aircraft were launched from Saratoga, but McNamara recalled them because he was fooled into believing it was the Russians.
