Vladislav werd voor dood achtergelaten

We bezochten Vladislav, een Oekraïense militair die anderhalf jaar geleden samen met zeven kameraden aan het front door Russische militairen gevangen werd genomen.

Hij vertelde ons zijn schokkende verhaal.

Vladislav en zijn kameraden werden één voor één gemarteld. Hij moest machteloos toezien hoe zijn vrienden werden verminkt en vervolgens geëxecuteerd. Er werden tongen uitgesneden, oren afgesneden en zelfs ogen en geslachtsdelen verwijderd.

Als laatste was Vladislav zelf aan de beurt. Ook hij werd zwaar mishandeld. Een deel van zijn oor werd afgesneden en zijn keel werd doorgesneden. De Russische militairen dachten dat hij dood was en gooiden hem samen met zijn omgekomen kameraden in een kuil.

Maar Vladislav leefde nog.

Wonder boven wonder wist hij uit de kuil te komen. Zwaargewond kroop hij vervolgens vijf dagen lang, stukje voor stukje, terug naar de Oekraïense linies.

Vandaag leeft Vladislav nog altijd met de lichamelijke en mentale gevolgen van wat hij heeft meegemaakt.

Wat ons misschien nog wel het meest raakte, is dat hij niets liever wil dan terugkeren naar het leger en opnieuw zijn land verdedigen. Maar hij is medisch afgekeurd. Dat valt hem zwaar.

Omdat hij geen inkomen meer heeft, willen wij hem graag betrekken bij onze humanitaire missies. Niet uit medelijden, maar omdat hij niets liever wil dan zich opnieuw nuttig maken voor zijn volk en voor zijn land.
