In November of last year, Senator Joe Manchin made the rather surprising announcement that he would not seek re-election to the United States Senate in 2024. Within a few weeks, I had several friends and acquaintances across #WestVirginia reaching out to encourage me to enter the Democratic primary for this critical Senate seat. As I began to give this run some thought, I decided to call Senator Manchin himself. Nobody has played a larger or more central role in the fabric of West Virginia life and politics over the last quarter century than he has, and I wanted to see if he thought this race was winnable and thus worth the considerable effort and time away from my family that it would require. He was incredibly generous with his time during that call. He made clear that he thought the race was far more winnable than the DC pundits were projecting. And he encouraged me to put my name on the ballot. Nearly five months later, no single conversation is more responsible for my Senate candidacy than that one. During my nearly eight years as Mayor of Wheeling, I have had numerous opportunities to work with Senator Manchin and his staff. Not only have they been great partners, but they have also delivered time and time again on securing funding for transformative projects for Wheeling and countless other communities across the Mountain State. And since I announced my candidacy, the Senator has taken every call I have made and has answered every question I have had candidly and directly.
