DHS statement described the event differently, stating that about 60 “rioters” threw rocks, bottles, and fireworks at officers, injuring two agents, and that two protesters were arrested on charges including assault on federal officers.

A use-of-force expert consulted by the LA Times noted that training protocols generally prohibit aiming less-lethal projectiles at the face/head due to the risk of serious injury or death, and firing at such close range can turn these tools effectively lethal.

This has sparked significant online discussion, with some viewing it as excessive force during a protest, while others frame it as a consequence of confronting law enforcement. A press conference by the activist group Dare to Struggle was held.
