@musicphanatic I really try not to. I think the Christian tradition is wide enough to contain people I strongly disagree with about theology, and am not interested in policing who is in and out.
@musicphanatic When I’ve heard him speak about it on podcasts, this is how he comes across. Like someone demanding Christians conform to the historical consensus of the church, which he overstates.
@musicphanatic That’s absolutely a fair pushback. I think when it gets wrapped up in the Christian worldview, it just gives it an extra layer of oomph. And don’t get me wrong - I resonated with it deeply as a young man.
@musicphanatic I historically have really appreciated Josh and I do like Showbread’s music. What I think is he eventually turned into the thing he hated = a conformist.
@musicphanatic No because I don’t think those songs are reflective of a scene that was overly self loathing. Christian metalcore and screamo seemed especially so to me. And I’m not the first person to say this. The Prophetic Imagination Station pod had a full season called Shamecore Records.
@musicphanatic I agree with the statement. I find Josh contradictory because he applies this thinking to people who are critical of his art, but not to himself when he is critical of others.
@musicphanatic I was talking about Christian metalcore in general and acknowledged I was guessing about why there was so much self loathing in songs like the one we were discussing.
