California is changing the way we collect data for Black Americans by starting to count descendants of the people who were freed from Chattel Slavery in the U.S. as the specific and distinct people we are, and not lumping us all into the "Black/African American" category, which makes it impossible to provide for the direct, timely, and targeted resources we need and, in reality, pay for with our own tax dollars, and have earned as a foundational population of the United States.

Here's how:

In 2024, due to the law we wrote @cjecofficial (SB 189, section 14, 2022), ALL California state agencies now have a specific category of data for descendants wherever data is collected for state employees. And the data is already coming in (more on that later).

Now, our new Senate Bill 515 (2025) will require EVERY CITY and EVERY COUNTY in California to do the same thing. One more step toward fixing a big problem: namely, if you can't see our community, you can't serve our community. And right now, we're completely invisible. We're ending this. Join us. Yes, you heard that right. California Republican lawmaker Bill Essayli, working closely with the grassroots, just introduced our bill to create a California American Freedmen Affairs Agency. The bill recognizes the historic contributions of the American citizens who've inherited the legal and political status known as American Freedmen and creates and empowers an Office of Freedmen Genealogy to immediately create and begin the process of identifying and verifying the status of American Freedmen in California, which will ultimately empower future state efforts to serve this foundational American population.
