After the Battle of Issus, Darius sent his ambassadors to Alexander to ask him to release his mother, wife, and children. In his letter, Darius wrote that Philip, Alexander's father, and Artaxerxes had formed a friendship and alliance, and when Arses, Artaxerxes' son, ascended the throne, Philip was the first to unjustly attack him without the Persians having done him any harm. And since Darius himself ascended the Persian throne, Alexander had not sent an ambassador to confirm their old friendship and alliance but instead invaded Asia with his army and caused many calamities to the Persians. For this reason, Darius took it upon himself to defend his country and preserve his ancestral authority. He requested the release of his wife, mother, and children who had been captured, and he was willing to form a friendship with Alexander and become his ally. To Darius' letter, Alexander responded with his own and sent Thersippus along with Darius' envoys, instructing him to deliver the letter to Darius but to avoid discussing anything with him. Alexander’s letter stated: "Your ancestors invaded Macedonia and the rest of Greece and caused us destruction without us having done them any harm beforehand. The Greeks appointed me as their leader, and I invaded Asia because I wanted to punish the Persians, since you were the first to start hostilities. For you aided the Perinthians, who wronged my father, and Artaxerxes Ochus sent military forces to Thrace, which was under our rule. My father was killed by conspirators you incited, as you yourselves boasted in letters sent everywhere. You, along with Bagoas, murdered Arses and seized power illegally, not in accordance with Persian law, thus wronging the Persians. You sent hostile letters against me to the Greeks, urging them to fight me, and sent money to the Lacedaemonians and some other Greeks, which no other Greek city except the Lacedaemonians accepted. Since your envoys tried to corrupt my friends with money and attempted to disrupt the peace I established with the Greeks, I marched against you, as you were the first to show hostility toward me. Having defeated in battle first your generals and satraps, and now you and the military forces with you, and possessing your land, which the gods granted me, I care for those who fought with you and were not killed in battle but sought refuge with me. They stay with me willingly and campaign with me willingly. Come to me, then, as if I am the King of all Asia. If you fear harm upon coming to me, send some of your friends to receive sworn assurances from me. And when you come to me, ask for and take your mother, wife, and children, as well as anything else you desire. Whatever you persuade me to give you will be yours. And in the future, whenever you send your people to me, it is as if you are sending them to the King of Asia; do not send me letters as an equal to an equal, but if you need anything, address me as the lord of all your possessions. Otherwise, I will decide your fate as if you are committing an injustice.
