URGENT APPEAL: Help Secure the Release of Detained Grandmother and Baby at Meridian Hospital, D-Line,Port Harcourt
THE BACKGROUND:
Mrs. Chiamaka a 36 years old married woman and resident of Port Harcourt, was a registered patient at Meridian Hospital Ikwere Road Port Harcourt.
In a painful twist of fate, she went into premature labour at just seven months of pregnancy. She was rushed to Meridian hospital Ikwere Road, Port harcourt, where she was receiving antinatal care. When the situation became intense, she was rushed to Meridian hospital, D-Line, port harcourt which is the head quarters of the Meridian hospital brand.
After delivering a preterm baby, she tragically bled to death.
Her premature baby was immediately placed in an incubator and remained under intensive care at the hospital for four months. By the grace of God, the baby survived. However, upon discharge, the hospital issued a bill of six million naira (₦6,000,000) an amount the bereaved and now grieving family could manage to pay 1,400,000, leaving a balance of 4,600,000.
THE PRESENT SITUATION :
Since then, for over one year and one month now the hospital has refused to release the baby and the child’s maternal grandmother, who was the caregiver during the baby’s admission. All pleas from the baby’s father for a structured, instalment-based payment plan have been flatly rejected. The hospital continues to hold the baby and the grandmother against their will, a practice that not only raises serious ethical and legal concerns, but also represents a gross violation of their human rights.
The condition in which the elderly woman and the baby are being kept is inhumane and deplorable. This prolonged detention is taking a physical and emotional toll on both of them, especially the child, who is now over a year old and has never experienced life outside the hospital walls.
