On 8 May 1945, WWII—the bloodiest and most devastating conflict in human history—ended for many. But not for Poland, the country that suffered the most in proportion to its population.
After the war, Poland went from German occupation to Soviet domination—despite playing a vital role in the Allied victory as the fourth-largest contributing force. Over 220,000 Polish soldiers fought under British High Command, forming one of the most significant national military contingents in the fight against Germany.
