Had a frank discussion with my colleague Péter Szijjártó at the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Copenhagen. Sweden and Hungary are allies and partners in the EU and NATO. Sweden, along with 25 other EU member states, strongly believes it is time for Ukraine to take the next step in its path to EU membership. I urge Hungary to join consensus and to allow us to open the first cluster of Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations.

Deltog nyss i ett möte med stats- och regeringschefer i ”Coalition of the Willing” inf��r president Zelenskyjs och europeiska ledares möte med president Trump i Washington i morgon.

Det finns ett mycket starkt stöd för Zelenskyj och för Ukrainas rätt att bestämma sin egen framtid. Vi diskuterade behovet av ett omedelbart eldupphör, möjliga gemensamma säkerhetsgarantier och annat stöd för Ukraina som en del av en eventuell kommande överenskommelse.

Svensk utgångspunkt i dessa diskussioner är vikten av att maximera trycket på Ryssland.

Sverige kommer att fortsätta vårt stöd till Ukraina och delta aktivt i diskussionerna om hur säkerhetsgarantier kan utformas, så att Putin inte kan använda en uppgörelse till att rusta upp för nya aggressioner. Som jag sagt tidigare - en d��lig fred, på Rysslands villkor, skulle äventyra fred och säkerhet också för oss och andra europeiska demokratier.

Jag vet att många svenskar känner oro över vad nattens samtal mellan Putin och Trump kan innebära.

En dålig fred, på Rysslands villkor, skulle betyda att Ryssland kan hota fler europeiska länder. Därför är det oerhört viktigt att ett enat Europa fortsätter ge Ukraina allt stöd som landet behöver för att inte förlora kriget.

Regeringen kommer nu fortsätta att föra en nära dialog med Ukraina, med andra europeiska länder och med USA. Trycket på Ryssland måste fortsätta för att nå vapenvila och få ett slut på kriget med starka säkerhetsgarantier för framtiden.

I spoke with President Zelenskyy today. I reiterated Sweden’s full and lasting commitment to supporting Ukraine in every way we can, including in the Coalition of the Willing.

We are the 5th largest donor to Ukraine in the world, and we will continue to provide military, humanitarian, and financial aid guided by Ukraine’s needs. Sweden fully supports the recent statement from European leaders on peace for Ukraine.

Today marks 17 years since Russia started its war against Georgia in 2008. Russia still maintains a military presence in the occupied breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, in clear violation of both international law and the ceasefire agreement that called for the withdrawal of Russian forces to pre-war positions.

Together with several European Foreign Ministers and @kajakallas, I have issued a statement regarding the deteriorating situation in Georgia. The recent imprisonment and detention of the leaders of Georgian opposition – as well as arbitrary arrests and increasing repression of representatives of civil society, peaceful protesters and independent journalists – contribute to the dismantling of democracy in Georgia, in contradiction to European norms and values.

On Friday July 11, the Georgian Chargé d’Affaires was summoned to the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, where a senior official expressed serious concern regarding the human rights situation in Georgia.

The arrests and sentences against opposition leaders erode Georgia’s democracy. Georgian authorities are also intensifying their crackdown on civil society and independent media.

Sweden will continue to stand up for a free, democratic and pluralistic Georgian society.
