At Chile’s National Stadium, the section known as “Escotilla 8” has been preserved in the same condition as when it was used as a detention and torture center during the Pinochet dictatorship. During every match, this area is kept empty as a memorial space to honor the victims of the fascist dictatorship and to ensure that the atrocities are not forgotten. Every September 11th, people bring candles to the stadium and hold commemorations there.
In 1973, the USSR was scheduled to face Chile at Estadio Nacional in the 1974 World Cup playoff. However, the Soviet Union refused to play in the stadium, which had recently been used for the torture and execution of political prisoners, and requested that FIFA move the match to another venue. When FIFA rejected the request, the Soviet team did not appear for the match, and Chile was awarded a default victory and qualification for the World Cup.
Approximately 40,000 political prisoners passed through the National Stadium. Thousands of people were tortured inside the stadium, many women were raped in the locker rooms, and dozens of people were summarily executed.
