Take lightly the advice you receive from those who have never shared your experience. It is easy to form an opinion about shoes you have never walked in.
It’s interesting how many people claim their favorite book is “How to Win Friends & Influence People”, yet interact with others like they’re applying “The 48 Laws of Power.”
Reading both will teach you more about people than either one alone.
The majority of the support you get as a business owner is not going to come from your family or friends.
Most of it is going to come from people you have never met or barely know.
Friends buy to support you.
Strangers buy because they need the product.
Remember:
Money ≠ class
Age ≠ experience
Busy ≠ productive
Confidence ≠ competence
Followers ≠ influence
There is peace in knowing and being able to identify the difference.
Be kind because you want to be, not because you expect it in return.
Give because you want to give, not because you expect something back.
Help because you want to help, not because you expect to be owed later.
It is okay to want different things at different ages and at different stages of life.
It is not okay to impose what you believe is right for someone else just because it is right for you.
At the end of the day, everyone is on their own journey, writing their own story.
Business is a brutal and honest sport.
Stay in it long enough, and you learn the difference between those who are serious and those who only appear to be.
People will ask you how.
You will tell them how.
And they will still do nothing.
This is why, even though information is free and accessible almost anywhere, guidance is not.
There is so much fake success on social media.
Keep this in mind:
If they spend the majority of their time talking about the work,
that leaves little to no time to actually do the work.
And that is how you spot an influencer in their field,
not a professional in it.
Over a long enough time span, relationships of any kind do one of two things:
They either evolve
or
they dissolve.
Which one happens is largely contingent on the intentions of the individuals involved.
Remember this:
A friend is not just someone who grabs a drink with you.
Anyone can do that.
A true friend pushes you to grow, holds you accountable, and makes you uncomfortable when needed.
If all you have is a “warm and fuzzy” friend, my friend, you are better off getting a pet.
In my 4 years in business, the people I avoid are those who:
1. Commit but never follow through.
2. Say they’ll “reschedule” but never do.
It has taught me to spot who is serious about business and who just says they are.
There’s always a difference.
People who belong to nothing
Will always long to belong to something.
And those without direction
Often end up following those just as lost.
Because when you have no purpose,
You become vulnerable to anyone who claims to offer one.
Even if they’re wandering too.
Many of you confuse your confidence with arrogance.
Your confidence is backed by something.
Your arrogance is backed by nothing.
One is easier to be than the other.
Nevertheless, those who understand the difference will know which side of the aisle you’re on.
