Hi @nimsaden - do you have an email I could contact you on? It's an urgent & personal question about a good friend of mine, related to an article you published in the Guardian UK in March of 2023 about Somali rehab/re-education camps - thanks in advance <3

The Federal Housing Advocate @HousingLogement also recently released a report on encampments, condemning the current carceral approach to homelessness and calling on municipalities to end forced evictions.
The City seems to be - yet again - ignoring these requirements.
🚨BREAKING: A Freedom of Information request shows emails between ABC Councillors, ABC Park Board Commissioners, and the Gastown Residents’ Association (GRA).
These emails suggest that the @ParkBoard plans to fully decamp CRAB Park Tent City - despite existing legal protections.
Deputy City Manager Sandra Singh (yearly salary: $306,774) recently admitted that the City will not change course despite resident feedback & will begin evictions on Monday.
(Sandra Singh also led the Hastings decampment & closed the Yaletown OPS - death upon death in her wake.)
Again, we call on @CityofVancouver to halt the violent enforcement of @ParkBoard bylaws against unhoused residents immediately. No more evictions, no more theft of residents' belongings, no more VPD intimidation. Land back, now and forever.
This displacement is a measure of ongoing colonial violence. While @CityofVancouver employees trumpet their dedication to reconciliation, they enact the same colonial violence daily on unhoused people.
Violent displacement via decampment forces unhoused people out of sight. Unhoused residents are more likely to be subject to violence because of efforts by @CityofVancouver and @ParkBoard to separate them from their homes and belongings.
Unthinking enforcement of the law can be deadly. @HousingLogement released a report that underscores the cruelty of @ParkBoard policy and enforcement due to their failure to uphold basic human rights of unhoused people:

Shelters across Vancouver are full.
People are being turned away, in the middle of an intense cold snap, days after the city forcibly decamped & stole tents from folks sheltering in Oppenheimer.

On the day of posting this, STOP THE SWEEPS Observers recorded Park Rangers stealing another tent from Oppenheimer Park.
While we are calling for a winter moratorium, we know there is no good season to steal from your neighbour & we'll resist sweeps no matter the weather.

You can hear more about all of this in two interviews on CBC's On the Coast.

This call comes after @Dave_Eby introduced Bill 45 which will allow municipalities to destroy tent cities so long as there are shelter spaces available that do not meet human rights standards.
We, as do many others, oppose it.

Our call is for @Dave_Eby, @KenSimCity and/or the @ParkBoard to do everything & anything to end winter displacement and evictions and lift the daytime shelter ban.
These three levels of Government each have the power to protect people's homes and belongings over the winter.

"We are garbage. That's the only thing that this approach is saying to us."
Park Rangers only offer people garbage bags & bins because when they see unhoused people's belongings, all they see is trash.
Also the City's street sweep screw is part of "solid waste management"🤮

"No heat. No hot water"
Drew is a former resident from CRAB Park who accepted housing. He calls this housing a facade.
Street sweeps exist to coerce people to take shelter or housing that is undignified. Stopping sweeps means having to build better housing.

While you're here, please consider making a donation to the CRAB Park Xmas and cold weather fund.
Over 60 people live at CRAB Park. These funds will go to an Xmas dinner, small gifts with winter gear and will generally bring bit of cheer.

"The City is stealing from us homeless people."
Jonathan had all his belongings stolen by Park Rangers. Twice.
@ParkBoard must acknowledge that their Rangers are destroying people's lives.

Some media coverage from our press conference included anti-drug user language said by one of the speakers.
We stand in solidarity with drug users who also face sweeps and displacement [as in Bill 34 which will dangerously displace drug users out of public spaces]

STOP THE SWEEPS is demanding an end to decampments, evictions and daytime sheltering bans over the winter.
We've seen too many people's belongings and homes stolen in the cold and rain so last week we held a press conference demanding a moratorium:
