Food insecurity is an issue that impacts Americans throughout the country. The future of food is finding ways to decrease food insecurity through programs like SNAP, food subsidies, and education about the guidelines set for nutrition and physical activity. #honorsgrandchallenges
Encouraging physical activity can be done in many ways. We learned about the PSE (policy, systems, and environment) model that looks at different methods. An example of a policy is a company allowing flex time so employees can come in later after a workout #honorsgrandchallenges
Did you know that physical activity provides immediate benefits? Immediately after physical activity, you can experience lower blood pressure, decreased anxiety, and better sleep. #honorsgrandchallenges Click the link for more benefits! https://t.co/Jl0rghthS6
Do you know the difference between fortified foods and enriched foods? Turns out, fortified foods have additional nutrients added that don't naturally occur in those foods. Enriched foods simply have nutrients replaced that go away during processing. #honorsgrandchallenges
Did you know that SDSU's own Dr. Padu Kirchner was published about in the Wall Street Journal for his work making nutritional snickerdoodles? Read the story about him here... #honorsgrandchallenges

An interesting discussion from class this week: how many brand logos do you see in your school? Compare that to the number of MyPlate posters. Does it even compare? Should there be limits on all types of marketing in schools? #honorsgrandchallenges
Did you know that federally funded schools are required to have a wellness policy? Also, it must be publicly available. I was able to find the policy from my high school with a quick search on the district website. What does your school's policy look like? #honorsgrandchallenges
An unexpected challenge of the SNAP challenge was convenience. I am used to stopping by ChickFilA for a bite or dropping by Starbucks for a quick pick me up. By following SNAP, my options were limited to what I bought and prepared for the day. #honorsgrandchallenges
My breakfast and lunch on the SNAP diet vs. a regular day. No campus food allowed! My diet of Starbucks, ChickFilA, and Panda Express got a major makeover. Will it turn out that I eat healthier on SNAP than on the meal plan? #honorsgrandchallenges
Are all crops subsidized by the government? No. Mostly commodities like corn, soy, wheat, rice, and oats. For a full list of the crops eligible for subsidies visit https://t.co/EYXklqm1l7
#honorsgrandchallenges
Do subsidized crops line up with the Dietary Guidelines? Not quite... MyPlate recommends 50% of each meal being fruits and vegetables, but less than 1% of food subsidies go to fruit and vegetable producers. #honorsgrandchallenges
