Finding the issue of what engagement looks like across subjects is very topical of late, would you say engagement during science lessons looks the same as engagement during an English lesson for example?
My default setting as a parent whenever my kids get in trouble at school is always, “well what did you do?” Because as a teacher I don’t know any teacher on this planet that would choose to increase their workload to give a child a sanction.
Absolutely blown away by tonight’s performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! 🌟 The talent, energy, and dedication from our students was incredible—what a show! So proud of everyone involved 👏🎭 @TorquayAcademy
My stepdad made a very poignant point earlier that if everyone spent 20% less on Christmas and donated that 20% to charity instead then so much good could be done across the world. A time for giving in more ways than one✨
'We must never fall into the madness of aspiring for "every school to be above average", as all we will be doing is chasing the bell curve': trust CEO Tom Leverage on why the GCSE grade 4 obsession is contributing to the Neet issue

When I first watched Educating Yorkshire I was 20, dropped out of college and working at boots. I remember saying to my mum, hmm I reckon I could do that. Fast forward 12 years and here I am, indeed doing it💫
Last week the North East was the lowest "performing" region at A level.
Today at GCSE, it ranks lowest when looking at pupils achieving grade 7 or above.
The North East is the least ethnically diverse region of England.
"White working class" the overwhelming majority.
But this is not a question of race. It is a question of class. It is a question of poverty.
The North East has suffered the sharpest rise in child poverty, with almost 40% of children now growing up below the poverty line.
When children are hungry, when families are struggling with insecure work and inadequate housing, when schools are forced to do more with less after a decade of cuts — outcomes will reflect that deprivation.
Education cannot be separated from the conditions children live in. If we are serious about improving outcomes for working class kids, we need:
- Investment in schools and early years,
- Proper funding for mental health and pastoral support,
- Secure, well-paid jobs for families,
- A welfare system that protects, not punishes.
End the two-child benefit cap NOW!
Children in the North East are every bit as talented, capable and ambitious as children anywhere else.
What they lack is not aspiration, but opportunity.
@STEMyBanda I couldn’t believe the difference in this when I moved from a school in the north where we struggled to recruit any science teachers at all to the south west where most schools in my area teach in specialism! Talk about widening the gap!
